Check out my new Kenwood touch screen receiver that inlcude Sirius, NAV, and integrated bluetooth hands free. There also is an IPOD/USB connection in the glove box. I am quite happy with the 2011 technology vs. my MY00 CD NAV that I never used due to slowness and outdated maps. As you can see the head unit has been replaced with the Kenwood unit. I found the DBL DIN bezal on eBay. In the trunk, the radio, amp, NAV and CD units were replaced with 2 amps. The bluetooth mic is mounted by the sunroof control unit. The GPS/NAV antenna is mounted on the dash on the far left and Sirius antena is on the front of the roof. This system ROCKs! The fit is pretty sweet too!

My shop, NE Motorsports, did the initial unit fitting/install. Then they sub contracted with an audio installer to do the main wiring, amp install and crossover tuning with my BSW Stage 1 speakers. They charged me 20 hours labor which included a wonderful detailing. I bought the receiver and add ons like steering wheel control and Sirius tuner from Crutchfield. It came out to ~900 and change. Install was over 2x radio cost.

Sorry to say, double dins always look hideously out of place in our interiors. Infact, anything other than the OEM stuff or the Dynavin just looks bad.

I am sure the deck and features are worth it, but I can't get over how it ruins the interior. Sorry :(

Thanks for your opinion.... I tend to disagree completely. It may not be the factory look you're used to, but change is always good and the new system keeps me engaged in the car. It is also another reason for me to not want to get rid of the car. ouich

To the OP, your fitment is good but the system simply looks out of place.. My suggestion is to replace the OEM screen with a touch screen using all oem internals, but that will never happen, it's too difficult.
When you put cutting technology into a car that was designed 12+ years, you're not going to achieve perfection. And I accept that which is where I am today with my car. My beast is very far from factory look and feel in all aspects I think you will all agree. Which is why I admire it so much. I am not a plain Jane kind of guy here boys. :checkeredflag:

You're right, it's your car, do as you wish. When you post photos you will get both positive and negative feedback. I check these sorts of threads for an install that I would want to replicate but it hasn't happened yet. I had high hopes for the Dynavin and even bought one for an E46 that I had just to experiment... it looked out of place too.

Clean the dust off next time too. :) J/K

It's a toughie, you've got to love the increased resolution of modern screens over our OEM, and the added features, better nav, easier to use, but I would agree, getting it to look right is not easy. Back when I had my Lexus, some of the US guys used to spend huge time and effort to get things looking factory.

Just got my navi upgraded also did the pioneer avic 130bt. I hate the look and I'm most defenitly going to get it back to stock. Just a headache for me and a lot of cash for the labor to get back to the way it was. I'm having trouble looking at the pictures where someone posted the e39 touchscreen project can any1 help me with that?
Hey mikeoski are you going to eurofest? I would like to see it in person Pm me if you are

A lot of the time it's just the ergonomics, and interior has a certain idea or plan for the curves, and this is followed throughout the interior. A different head with sharper corners, or a different black for example, just stands out too much. For me anyway. The head in our cars is too large to blend in or not be noticed too much, it's not like a single-DIN hidden away at the bottom of the dash behind the gearstick, it's pretty much the focal point of the dash, and that makes it harder.

Just my two cents.

Mikeoski,
With this aftermarket unit, is it possible to access the onboard computer anymore? I assume this and the secret menu are no longer accessible.

No more OBC. I never used it anyways. What are referring to when you say; "secret menu"?

Just got the screen mounted yesterday and will be painting it to match the trim soon. I'll be able to hook it into any diagnostic port and have direct accesss to any info I'll need. Along with GPS and iPod capability.

Any aftermarket head unit is going to be very unusual if it hooks into the iBus...

It's just something else you lose.

#29 ·
No, but you lose the ability to view things through the headunit...

You managed to disconnect/knock something out behind the dash there, do any of the other buttons in that panel work still?
