I just had a couple more questions regarding the M5 and 996. Please Help!!
I just have a couple more questions my friend asked me to ask that should satisfy is quest for info. Please if anyone can answer the following questions from their experience with 2002 996's only, (no 99-01) I would really appreciate it.
Thank you for taking the time to answer my question regarding the M5 vs the 996 coupe. My friend is trying to determine which car will be worth more in 1-11/2 years. The 99-01 996's got hit real hard but, I assume that is for two reasons. The 2002 996 is a vast improvement and many useds 996's were traded in for 2002 models and the 996 looked so much like the boxter people were angry. I think with the changes made for 2002 Porsche will reestablish itself as a leader in their cars holding their value. What do you think and what were your experiences with this.
On a different note, people mentioned that the M5 has torque at any rpm and that it was noticable over the 996. I definately agree, however, the 996 and the M5 are fairly equal performance wise right? The 996 just has to be driven differently, above 4000 rpm's. If this is done the 996 and M5 should have the same performance on the highway, 0-60, 40-60, 60-80?
My friend really wants a 996 coupe but he drove my M5 (it has the Dinan 3.45 diff) and felt it was quite a bit faster than the 996 he drove. The 996 only had 30 miles on it though and my M5's engine is broken in. Could that make that much of a difference? Will the 996 get significantly faster once broken in? I know my M5 did. Thanks again.

I believe the 996tt and the M5 has relatively similar performance. The M5 has always been faster than the 996 regular version. Don't know about the 02s though.
I don't think the car's perfromance improves with break in, at our skill level, it's all with how aggressively we drive. If he drove the Porsche and the M5 similarly, then the difference in feel is what the car can deliver.
If he REALLY wants the Porsche, then he should not worry about just how much faster the M5 can go. With the Porsche, he'll beat most other cars on the road already, and how often he'll get to race an M5 anyway. It's not going to be eveyday. If he bought the M5 just for speed when he REALLY wants the Porsche, he'll kick himself with hughe buyer's remorse.
In my opinion the 996 02 model and the m5 if raced from 0 to 60mph the 996 would have the m5(just)..however in real driving conditions i.e motorway from 60mph to any speed the m5 would be quite a bit ahead of the 996...
We were behind a 996 2000 model coming out onto the straight at nurburgring..we both nailed it and coming up to 145mph when you then have to brake.. we were ahead by a couple of lengths..bearing in mind we werent riding his bumper from the start we walked past him..
turbo on the other hand....
all the best

Sorry CP but I have to chime in here. The 996TT will blow the M5 away in any category. I have driven both cars quite a bit and I can tell you, sadly, the M5 is no match for the TT. (performance wise)
I do believe that the M5 is a bit faster and most definitely torquier than the base 996.

The car handles and stops great; very nimble and FLAT-cornering. It just feels like a true sports car.
However, I've been spoiled by the Beast's torque. I kept banging the rev limiter in the Carrera because the powerband was up so high, I was just getting a taste of decent torque when I would run out of revs...!

I haven't even driven a 996 TT but I can just imagine. I drove a 1996 993 TT and it blew away the M5 in all categories as well. I am interested only in the 996 coupe vs the M5, no turbos. I agree with the torque thing, M5 definately has much more and everywhere in the rev range. But, I'll ask again, if the 996 coupe is kept high in the rev range, it should keep up with the M5 right?
Thanks
