Got some issues with my sound system..

Ok, now that I have the car for almost a week, and had the time to RTFM (read the fine manuals), I have discovered a number of problems with my sound system.

1) every so often, the CD will not play. The display shows the CD & track number, but no sound is coming out. and then, after 2-10 minutes, it suddenly starts. I know that the CD was "playing" because when the sound starts, the music has advanced while it was "muted".. to cure this, I have to turn the ignition on/off a number of times, and then it works for a while..

2) Intermittently, the M-bass woofers will not sound. Again, this happens when the car starts. The cure: turn the ignition on/off a number of times, and the bass comes back.

Anyone with similar experience?

another annoying thing, the dealer didn't program the Key/Memory options I have asked.. Now in order to close all windows with the key, I need to actually put teh key in teh door and twist for 3 sec., instead of being able to use the remote.. Oh well.. I am bringing the car in on Jan 25..

Arie.

I haven't experienced your problems, but this seems and appropriate string for my question. The small fine mesh grilles in the upper door panels near the front all four doors....are these for speakers (tweeters)? If so, I have even used a stethoscope and cannot isolate any sound coming from these grilles. I have a feeling I'm about to feel stupid when someone answers my question.

Rad,

the speakers you are referring to are for the phone... if and when you install it?

If that's the case.... Then where are the [10 - 12] speakers for the sound system located in the passenger compartment?

The speakers in the corners of the front doors are sound system tweeters.

The speakers in the other mesh grill inserts on the front doors facing each occupant are for the phone.

The speakers in the upper front part of the rear doors are sound system tweeters.

You get drivers in each of the 2 front doors. You get 2 tweeters in front. You get 2 tweeters in the rear doors. You also get midrange speakers on the rear deck (not sure if they are one way or two way?) and of course, if your beast is a 2000 model, you get the POS (Piece O Crap) sub enclosure which contains 2 or more drivers. I have of course upgraded my car with some great subs to replace this anemic setup from the factory!

Someone else please correct me if I am wrong on this?

Andy,
I think you are right. Particularly about the very weak sub woofers. I am planning on having mine replaced with the 2001 sub woofers. I hear that they are a great improvement over the 2000 models.
Has anyone heard the difference between the 2000 and the 2001 sub woofers for comparison?

If you chose the M Audio Enhanced bass option in 2001, the tweeter area on the door, to the right of the air vents is empty. Just a grill with nothing behind it. On my 2000 it WAS occupied and if you did not get the M Audio in 2001--same deal.
The difference between my '00 and '01 with M Audio is dramatic. It is certainly the best stock BMW audio system ever.

Jim,

I'm anxious to hear about your adventure (re: updating your 2000 sound system with the 2001 M-Audio rear subwoofers). What is the Part No. for them? Is the amplifier different? What about crossovers and other different hardware? Are you planning on changing your front speakers to the 2001 coaxial units? I also believe that the tweeters are different (either in terms of their performance and/or material) -- are you planning on changing them too? I wonder what the cost would be to completely update the stereo system to 2001 M-Audio spec. I also wonder if for similar money, a superior aftermarket solution could be devised (although nothing beats the tonal and accoustical balance that can be achieved by a manufacturer such as BMW, who has virtually unlimited resources (if they so desire to marshall) to develop and optimize a refined audio solution within the confines of the car's interior environment).

All of the speaker cones are KEVLAR in the M- Audio system. The "punch" is quite noticeable over the old system.

I found that the infinity bass link sub that bavarian autosport sells with their kit was easy to install and after some tweaking it really improves the stock 00 system. I havent heard the 01 system but I can say that the bass is deeper w/o being bloated.
