Sport Button make a big difference ?
I've been trying to figure out why my M5 just doesn't seem like its really a sub 5 second 60 MPH car.
While testing it, I can push the SPORT button and the car feels like I'm bumped a little from behind and maybe gain 1 MPH. This is in 3rd gear.
Can someone try this and let me know what their car does >? The dealer says without a fault code, they don't know !

Rob, thinking was thinking about this. The sport button just changes the sensitivity of the pedal, since it's drive by wire. I wonder if you could have a faulty TPS? Seems that would cause an error, but you never know. It sure didn't feel right when you pushed the button in your car.

Yup, same as my 12/99 build, when I forget to push the sport button (it's mostly reflex now after 2+ years :-) at startup I'll push it while moving and pick up a little speed which feels like "a bump from the back".

My build date is 11/01 and does the same thing, Every M3 or M5 I have ever driven does this when I hit the sport button. Hope that helps.

Rob,
What's your RPM in 3rd gear when you activated sport? I feel a pretty good bump and a continous increase in speed of about another 5 mps without additional throttle. I'd say my RPM is around 2500 to 2800 when I feel this happen.
Hope this helps.
Paul

I feel the same thing on my 02. The steering becomes a little stiffer as well. You get more gas quicker with less pedal trave is how I would describe the effect on the gas with sport on.
Driven near redline with quick hifts definitely makes it a sub 5 car.

Rob...
Perhaps you should ride in another car (preferably stock a stock M5) for comparison...

Hi all,
Yeah, maybe I'll try and a ride in a stock M5 at the next Club meet we have...
Their should be a lot of difference between me and 400hpjunkie with the Sport button- pushing mine doesn't do that much, just a little bit.
Anyway, it seems I need to let mine break-in, the dealer can't help me until there's some kind of error code...
I was told, the car would spin a 3rd gear scratch a little, mine does not... (not that I do that a lot, but was a test).
Mmm, thanks for all the input folks !

My understanding is that the Sport mode button does not make the accelerator more sensitive-- it changes the acceleration/power curve from a curve to a straight line. This gives more power at the lower RPMs which explains why you may feel the "bump" in 1st or 2nd and not as much in 3rd. In addition, the Sport mode also stiffens the steering response.

Everything I've read indicates that sport mode increases the amount of throttle opening vs gas pedal position at part throttle positions. In other words it opens the throttle more for a given amount of distance the gas pedal is pushed. This sudden extra throttle opening causes the kick you feel. It does make the car feel like it has more power at part throttle positions. There is no difference at max throttle so no power is gained and ultimate performance and acceleration are the same. What I have noticed is when wanting to play, the quicker throttle of sport mode helps with smoother high RPM shifts. In the heavy traffic that I face every day, the non-sport mode makes it easier to be smooth creeping along.

Sport changes 'Timing' ?
First, thanks to everyone that's assisted me here, it has helped a lot...

Zoom might be onto something here. The Lead M5 tech at BMW Sterling told me " The Sport Mode changes the Timing of the Cams (I didn't ask which or both) and basically would set it a little bit more advanced " (makes sense as there's little chance of Knock under acceleration).
Was also told that the button only 'lights up' if the computer sense the correct timing change...its not just an on/off switch.
From what 'zoom' wrote and the Tech, it means I need to test my Sport Button in 1st and 2nd under some acceleration, but not floored in hi revs...
Mmm, we shall see !
