I love it. Particularly this, from the bottom of Page 5:

        Quote:
Compared with the wild rides at the front of the pack, this year's official One Lap entry by the beloved car magazine you are now reading may seem a bit tame, but it was enough to give your faithful correspondent and teammates Jim McCraw and John Ursone the coveted Luxury Sedan class trophy, something we've been pursuing for three seasons. And as much as we'd like to suggest this achievement was the result of steely-eyed cool and scalpel-sharp skills, we have to admit the car probably had something to do with it. It was a BMW M5, which doesn't rhyme with "Wow!" but should.

I like the rest of the write up on the M5 (top of page 6).

        Quote:
There were some reasonably hot entries arrayed in what proved to be an exceptionally deep 10-car Luxury Sedan field -- a factory-backed Cadillac STS with a 350- hp version of the Le Mans pace-car engine, for example, plus four S4 Audis, Arpad Papp's RENNTech-massaged Mercedes C43, and a brand-new Saab 9-3 Viggen, another factory entry. But with 400 horse-power on tap, our white M5 was the overdog all the way. All we had to do was keep it on the track, which we did, pretty much. At two tons, the M5 is certainly no wraith, and it isn't exactly eager to attack corners, but it was conspicuously faster than anything else in the class. Someone suggested it was like bringing a gun to a knife fight. Then again, if you were invited to a knife fight, wouldn't you bring a gun if you could? And a big one? We finished 18th overall. And we rest our case.

Now it makes more sense. I was surprised to see John Hennessey in this year's race. I thought he was out running from the Law!

        Guys,

I just did some reading on this particular car, because Simeon was a frequent poster on Bimmer.org, roadfly.com, whatever the hell that trash board is called now!

Anyway, did you guys notice this car, in 46th place?

        62 BMW 740 IL Luxury Sed 3695
Simeon Mackrides, David Flogaus, Ben Greisler

The stuff he did to his E38 is simply amazing, you guys would be most impressed!

He took a '97 740iL, swapped the auto out for a 6 speed manual, created a 16lb. aluminum billet flywheel with the same specs as an M5 one to save weight (16 vs. 38 lbs.), bolted an ESS supercharges that puts out well over 400hp, put in a custom coilover suspension and runs on 18" Fikse FM10 wheels.

Talk about a monster of a car! Imagine a 740iL blasting past sports cars on the track!

Do a search on the web under Simeon and 740IL, it is simply amazing at how sick this car is!!!

What I'm wondering is, if he went through all that trouble, why not swap in an M5 motor and THEN add a supercharger? That would be an UBER-Beast, and a more comfortable one too!

The E38 is awesome! I've been wanting to mod a 740i for some time now and had given up hope of putting a six speed into it - until now! Thanks
