Stoptech Brake Kits - Are they approved by BMW?

I am considering installing the Stoptech brake kit on my beast and would like to know if the Stoptech kit (or any others for that matter) are approved by BMW.

In South Africa our cars have a 100 000km/5 Year Motorplan which covers all service and repairs (excluding tyres). Any modifications to the car can void the Motorplan and I would like to know if this situation is true for America and other parts of the world.

AC Schnitzer modifications are allowed and do not void the Motorplan - but thats not what I want. I would like to get the guys at BMW to allow me to have the Stoptechs installed on my car and still maintain my Motorplan.

I would appreciate any input here as I would like as much ammo as possible when I present my case to BMW soon.

Does anybody have technical specs/data on the Stoptechs that I can use to strengthen my case too?

Thanks a lot.

Essentially the stance on aftermarket parts is that if you replace anything on your M5 with something other than OEM parts the warranty for that part is voided. In other words, BMW will not cover the Stoptech's but they will continue to cover the other parts that are OEM parts. Typically some aftermarket manufacturers such as Dinan for one will offer their own warranty.

What do you plan to do? Is there a reason why you're "presenting" your case to BMW?

In the United States, it is against the law for a car manufacturer to void the entire warranty based on the installation of an aftermarket part. They must show reasonable evidence that the failure was caused by the modification. For example, if I install StopTech brakes on my E39 and then the air conditioning fails, they can't deny me warranty service on the climate control based on my installation of aftermarket brakes. However, if the master cylinder fails, it would not be unexpected for them to try to claim that the brakes caused the failure since they are part of the same system. I would fight them on this, but would probably lose if it went to arbitration or to an administrative judge.

In South Africa, the laws may be different. Do you have access to anything on-line that describes the terms of your "Motorplan?" Does the fine print specifically say that the entire plan may be voided if you install any non-approved aftermarket part? Or is this just what your dealer told you?

If you want detailed technical information to support your effort to gain approval (if this is, in fact, required), you would be best served by going directly to the source.

For StopTech, you should contact Bob Lee or Matt Weiss.

For Mov'it, you should contact Guido Frensemeyer.

I'm not sure who you would want to talk to at Brembo. I don't have any contacts there yet.

I don't think Schnitzer even has brakes for the M5.... you should contact BMW SA directly to see what they have to say

Getting little OT here but...

richardk,

noticed that you are form South Africa.

I was browsing the BMW SA web-site and there was some spec sheet that said that the M5 comes with EDC (Electronic Damper Control) as standard.

I thought that it's not possible to have EDC with M Sport suspension.
