Tick-tock, my M5's days are numbered!

Just got back from placing a "reservation" for a 2003(4?) E55. I am the first person at the dealership, so it will probably be next spring or summer. They have zero info, most of it coming out of Europe or the car mags. If only BMW brought out a new M5 every 3-4 years . This will probably be my in-between car for a hoped to be produced M6. That is if Bangle doesn't bungle it.

Jim

AMG cars usually come out, at least in the US, about 6-12 months after a new line is introduced. The new E55 should come out when you said, late Spring / Summer of '03, which would be 6-9 months after the new E debuts in the US this late Summer / early Fall. The new CLK line, coming to the US around the same time as the new E, is not supposed to have an AMG product for at least 1 year, however.

The '03 CL and S class get some minor facelift / rear-end / interior work this Fall '02 and the SL55 engine will appear in both models at that time. And the S (not sure about the CL) will get a twin-turbo V-12 engine option in addition to the 55 supercharged engine. The V-12 TT should have similar power numbers to the 55 but a different suspension setup and different power curve, much in the same way that the current S55 and S600 differ. That CL55 should be something very special...

Transmission on all the AMG's is supposed to be a behind-the-wheel button shift system, like Porsche's Tiptronic, except MB's buttons are behind rather than on the wheel.

Of course, until MB announces any info, none of this means much. This info comes from sources which historically have been quite reliable, but does not come directly from MB.

Hi,

The picture posted as the new E55 is actually a retouched photo of an E500 . Below is a link to the new E W211 series from MBSPY which might give you some ideas as to what the car will look like.

Just wondering, DrJimM5, if the dealer made any mention of MB's increasing the production of the E55 (only around 500 made last year).

I've heard that the E55 will not be available in the US till 2004. At about which time the new M5's will start production . All new AMGs, as A_Train said, will have the "Steptronic" tranmission ala Prosche. So not really a clutchless manual like SMG which will be available on the M5.

As of now, the CLs only get face lifts with essentially the same engine which seems bit of strange move by MB.

I've looked into the E55 and am wondering how you arrived at the decision to get it vs an E60 M5?

yes, im sure that is a 6 speed, but look, it has no leather. It is most likely an E240 which is made for European markets. The future E55, as with most AMG offerings will have white faced guages and black maple wood trim......and a 6 speed automatic!

Rs, I haven't really chosen the E55 over the M5. It's just my guess that it will be available at the time-frame I want, whereas the next M5 will probably be a bit late. I'm sure I will get my M5 deposit in as well when the dealer starts to realistically take them. Except for the lack of a manual, what's not to like about what is sure to be a wickedly fast sedan. I'd expect at least a 4.5s 0-60 that could be done all day long. As to weather or not this is THE car that replaces my M5 I'm not sure, but it very well could be.
Safe motoring to all & happy Mother's Day!

Jim,
Happy mothers day to your wife and best wishes for whatever you replace the M5 with. The new E55 will be a sweet ride. Im sure it has a steptronic mode for you to play with. I am reading on bimmer.org that the BMW board is livid over the criticism of the 7 design and that might force a change in the exterior design. IMHO, far more problematic is the mindset behind idrive.

And Me, it may hold up the E60. I likes the version in the Feb Roundel. If you have it take a look.
