Reason to upgrade NAV.
I have MKIII NAV with version 3-1/20. I don't know how that translates into CD version (i.e. 17.x maybe?). I know it's old but it works. I like the combo radio/OBC screen which I know I would lose if I upgrade. My dealer says systems appear to run slower after upgrading to the latest. He couldn't tell me what the "latest" was they had (not sure if 18.2, 19) but said he would do it for free. He advised against upgrading, however, due to the performance issues they noticed. I also heard of some bugs with the new versions (e.g. NAV volume; mine works fine now). I am not sure what's worse, some old bugs or the new bugs. I know the new s/w offers some cool features (i.e. split-screen).
I've got all the files (ready to burn CD's) but am hesitant because I don't have files for my existing (old) version and figure I can't go back if I want to.
Anyway, I'm just wondering if there's anyone out there that had a rev similar to mine and regretted upgrading. Did anyone notice a serious slow-down in system performance after upgrading and any word yet of another bug-fix release?
Rgds,
Norm

Are you sure you will lose the split screen Norm? This sounds like a step backwards to me.
I am thinking of upgrading my SatNav to incorporate the RDC-TMC traffic system (as on the new 7 series) because the shortest route is never usually the quickest in London traffic.

Norm,
I agonized over the same issues and finally took the plunge. I'm glad I did. The new version looks much better and the new moving map display is something I'll never be able to live without.
There are trade offs, but in the end, you can only run one version at a time, and I prefer the way the new one works.

Ashok: I will not lose the "split screen" feature that shows directional arrow together w/map, because my old rev did not have that feature. But as I understand it, I will lose the screen that shows both radio (top 1/3) and OBC (bottom 2/3), which I like. Maybe that's what you are calling 'split screen'. I think I would lose it.

Tony: I may end up doing it. I heard that the newer rev's "look better" but I'm not sure I know what that means exactly. Is it that the graphics are more detailed. better colors? What "quality" is it that makes it look better than your old rev?
Then of course there seems to be the mysterious change of regional setting (i.e. from US to, UK or something) so distance shows up in yards instead of feet. I think it requires a trip to the dealer to correct. As a matter of fact, I think some dealers unwittingly caused this change on some people's systems. Oh well, nothing that can't be corrected later if it happens I guess.
Rgds,
Norm

If you don't like it, you can always downgrade back to 17. It should be much faster for you, not slower.

only version 18 is slower than 17. Perhaps your dealer has version 18? version 18.2 and 19 is much faster...

I have the same nav question. A few months ago I asked my dealer about an update for my '99 build 2000 M5 nav which has the original software - they told me it was just for later models and seemed reasonably authoritative in explaining why. Can anyone verify if that's the case?

I have recently upgraded to the new version. I think in the reply, people forgot about the fact that it will automatically return to the previous screen that you were in when you turn it on. The new split screen (route map and direction) helps me a lot when I need the directions. It's always nice to have a count down of when you need to make your next turn. Enjoy your new version, I know I did.
