Can't help you with the revving noise. However I have noticed that my interior lights also fluctuate. I guess it is an electronics problem in that the output of the alternator is not sufficient or maybe isn't regulated correctly. While my passengers think I am crazy as they say it is hardly noticeable I just go nuts at night! I have seen this problem on a Cadillac and man was it a PITA. The SA of course wanted to keep the caddy so they could drive it at night and see what I was talking about. I have not approached the BMW folks but if they think I would let them keep my car for a night to go out and find a problem I think I may try and figure something else out.
the brightness thing is normal. The alternator can't keep up with the current draw of the headlights, taillights, interior lights, computers, radios, etc - at idle. So at that point you're drawing on the battery and the voltage drops, causing the dimming effect you see. As soon as you get into anything resembling cruising revs, the alternator is making its full output, which is more than enough to run the electricals AND charge the battery. When the battery is receiving a surplus of current as opposed to being drained, the voltage is significantly higher - as high as 14.2V - while at rest and with a big load it might drop to 12.5V or less.

While we're on the subject, I have noise in the AM mode of the radio from engine revs and going over sharp bumps in the road. That sounds like a click. They have a fix for this, usually putting a filter in the line from the ground to the radio or in the pos line. Anyone have this happen to you?

My AM radio clicks when running over manhole covers, even when they seem to be perfectly smooth with the roadway. I've wondered if it's a static discharge or just a particular type of bump impulse that makes the radio click. It doesn't seem to do it on rough pavement, just manhole covers.
