Hi Group - I realize I don't have an M5, but I find this group to be a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the OBC/Nav/Entertainment system in the E39. I have searched the archives and found alot of great information, some rather old. I wanted to post this message to you in hopes of gathering more current information, if it's available.
I have had my 2002 530i for about 3 weeks now and have logged about 2000 miles.
I don’t know if these things are ‘as designed’ or if they are actually problems. I plan on addressing them with a BMW Center when I have time, but until then, maybe you folks have some of the same issues and have a fix.
I gather that the general consensus is that v5.0 of the software is still very buggy. For the record, my software version is 3-1/50, or v5.0. This is the latest and greatest (subjective) as far as I can tell. My BMW Center has confirmed this.
I do not have DSP and I’m using a BMW CD Changer (part number ends in 404) from my 1999 528i. No aftermarket mods to the system at this time.
Alarm – Visual Acknowledgement
I have my alarm set to beep and flash the lights upon arm/disarm. When arming or disarming it, the flash of the lights is not in synch with the beeps I hear. The flash is delayed. On my 1999 528i, the beeps and flashes were in synch.
Normal or problem?
OBC – Instrument Cluster Display
It doesn’t remember the setting when I shut down the car and return to it later. If I set the display to “Time” for instance, it remains as I drive, but the next time I use the car the display is reset or blank again. My 528i remembered what I set it at (Outside Temp usually) from use to use.
Question: Is there any way to change the order and/or the readings that are displayed when tabbing through using the turn signal stalk button? My E36 allowed me to adjust the order of the displayed items and I’d expect this car to do the same. FYI, RTFM is not appropriate as the one shipped with my car is for version 4.0 of the software, not version 5.0 that is installed in my car. My Center is looking into ordering me an updated manual, if it exists.
CD Disk/Track – Instrument Cluster Display
I get no display of CD/Track in the instrument cluster, except after I use the steering wheel controls to skip a track. Then I see “CDC d – t” where d=disk, t= track, in the informational display area. I do not see this when changing tracks using the monitor control buttons.
Furthermore, the instrument cluster display seems to get stuck on one CD/Track while the Nav monitor displays the correct one. Last night I was listening to a CD with 17 tracks, the cluster display stopped at #11 while the monitor continued to display the track correctly.
Also, if I’m listening to a CD and the CD/Track is displayed in the cluster message area, then I switch to the Radio, the CD/Track remains displayed until the car is shut down again. This doesn’t seem normal to me.
Radio – Station # Display in Nav Monitor
I find that while scanning stations, manually or automatically, the station display in the Nav monitor is slow to react. By the time a station is displayed on the screen, I may already be listening to the next station I scanned to.
Should I also see this information in the Instrument Cluster message area?
Nav Monitor – Preset Station Display
I was told that I should see a list of my preset radio stations in the box below the Station #/Call Sign when in that mode for viewing. I do not see any preset information, or anything else in this box, when listening to the radio or CD.
Nav – Voice Volume
When I change the Nav Volume on the Settings page, no apparent difference is audible no matter where I set it. It seems to be constant no matter what the volume of the audio system is. When the radio volume is low, I can hear the voice fine. When the radio is loud, the voice isn’t quite as audible. With the radio off completely, the voice is fine.
If I set it (on settings page) to Max, I notice that the voice mutes the music completely. When I set it to the middle, the music lowers, but doesn’t mute completely. Maybe this is what the setting is supposed to do. I would expect the nav voice volume to be proportional to the stereo volume and related to the setting I make on the Settings page. This is not the case.
Often times when the nav voice chimes in, I hear a clicking sound through the speakers. It appears to be worse when the stereo volume is louder, but I have heard it when the stereo volume is low as well.
I have learned how to enter the Service menu to adjust the TP Volume (Telephone) as apparently the Nav voice uses the same setting. Doing this has allowed me to adjust the base volume of the Nav voice, but the Settings page stills seems to only affect the muting characteristics, not the volume of her voice.
Nav – Address Book
When entering an address for the Address Book, there is no way to input a street number or intersection. Does this make sense?
