An ORIGINAL BMW 507 FOR SALE !!!

Yes - the styling inspiration for the Z8 from 1957 is up for auction at Christies New York on May 18th. This is one cool car - check out www.christies.com (has anyone here actually driven one?).

Agreed, very cool car. I still like the present Z8 better though-- which IMO, is also destined to become a classic. Here's another link to save others from searching: http://www.christies.com/promos/may0...ery.asp?page=9

Cheers.

couldn't find it. Can you give better info than the christie's home page?

This is a rare car - they don't come up often. AFAIK, it is also very valuable - prob. Go somewhere betyween $500K and $1M

Some of you may remember that I posted a note on the MB about the 507 that I owned for 20 years. I bought it in 1968 and had to sell it in 1988. I paid $18k and sold it for $50k. The next one sold at Christies that year for $490k followed by a private sale for $240k. Mine had 21,000 miles and had been owned by Pete Fountain, the New Orleans jazz musician.

We had located 241 of the 254 that had been built and even knew which had burned, which were in South America, etc. I even visited the gentleman in Germany who had purchased all the remaining parts for all the V8s and remember, vivedly how the wooden fender molds were rotting in the back yard of his farm house. You may know that the 507 was an aluminum bodied car with all the body parts being hand-hammered out on a wooden mold. You could see the hammer marks on the underside of the body parts.

Two of the other original owners of 507s were Elvis and one of the acting Caradine brothers.

I continue to have lots of parts for the car (which I purchased from that gentleman in Germany) and someday hope to reacquire one.

I could go on at length about the effect the 507 had on BMW AG, but I have probably told you far more than you wanted to know.

a friend of mine mentioned that his dad and uncle had two old BMW cars in the basement of their machine shop. They were restoring them with tender loving care. At the time I didn't know enuf to ask what they were, and wouldn't have known anyway.

A few months later I was out on a sunday ride on my m/c and saw his uncle in a beautiful blue 507! To this day I'm still in amazement that these two brothers had TWO of them! Don't know what happened to either car, but the one I saw sure was pretty to look at.
