Not sure if its wishful thinking, or my hyper sensitivity to Intake Air Temp; but it sure seems that with this cold snap here in LA, (yea I know 40 degrees isn't really that cold to the rest of you who live in silly cold places), that she sure seems to have a renewed zest for converting expensive gas into thrust lately...Coming home lasty night about midnight the tail stepped out in the dry with normal throttle on a road oft traveled...Exciting and a bit surprising...
I also just did an oil change during which, for the second time now, i used Lubro Moly engine flush...The thought occured to me that perhaps the flushes are doing good things to/for the VANOS system? I would think that clean oil passages would do good things for all the inner magic workings of the system...
Colder air is denser and therefore has a slightly higer oxygen content. It is usually also less humid as well, again dry air tends to be slightly higher in oxygen content.
Additionally the colder air temps also keep the air intake path a bit cooler, for better overall performance.
What you are experiening is fairly typical as air temps drop close to freezing.
So funny you mentioned this. I noticed yesterday that when I drove my car and got on it through 3rd gear, the red light flashed on my boost gauge. It is set at 9psi. That was in 42 degree weather, the most boost I have experienced yet. Car continues to pull like a freight train. Even though its not news to me, it is still amazing how much of a difference the cold/dry air can make.
Winternationals are in Pomona today, I would venture that records will be broken.
cold temps do boost performance... on the other hand, when it's too cold, m5s are more likely to throw 2ndary air filter codes, exhibit creaky steering, squirrel around in the snow/ice, etc. I'm jealous of Cali's climate-- sometimes cold enough to get the good side, but generally, not too cold to induce the drawbacks.
