Guys, may seem like a silly question but i have done a search and i know all about the front centre jacking point, but theres no reference to exactly where it is other than " a few feet back from the nose" or other such references i can find.
I have my car supported up on one side at the moment and i need to get the whole front in the air. I can see a bulge in the undertray in the centre and was wondering if this is where your floor jack needs to be placed for lifting in the centre??
I suppose i could remove the undertrays first but i was wondering if there was a quick way to do this without removal of them with only 1 side jacked as its a bit of a PITA. Then once its in the air on both sides it would be easier to remove the trays to allow me to work on removing my thrust arms/suspension
It looks like a slightly domed metal nub about 4 inches in diameter, just behind the small rectangular oil drain plug access panel. It is in between the front plastic undercover and the middle one that covers the transmission. It's the only thing metal down there.
You cannot put a jack on the jack point without raising one of the front wheels onto a ramp or something else because the car is so low... even with a super low profile jack (like I have). I typically jack up one of the front wheels using the rubber side jack point, lower that wheel onto a big bag of sand or something similar, and then attack the center jack point. Kind of a pain, but easy nonetheless.
Note: always lower your car exactly the opposite of how you raised it. If you raised the front before the rear (on the diff), lowering the front first will make it ridiculously hard to get the rear down. Trust me on this.
I do have the car in the air on one side at the moment, and so i can get my jack under no bother, but i can't see anything obvious with the undertray on, apart from a bulge in the plastic tray. Can i jack up on this plastic bulge, as in, is the support for jacking located undern this?
It's not a bulge in the plastic.. It's an open part of the undertray that reveals a metal sort of plate, it's dead centre and well behind the oil flap. You know there are two undertray sections, the first comes up to the bumper and covers the majority of the engine under, the second is further back and actually covers the transmission. I have used it and I am pretty sure from memory the opening for this metal area is actually in that rearward section of the undertray.
It's part of the front subframe. It's quite a thick steel sheet in the centre. Don't jack anywhere else as you will be on the plastic undertrays and the alloy housings/oilpan beyond them.
One more little thing, use some form of axle stand, never depend on a jack alone. I'm sure you know this, but better to have reminded you...
