My a/c is acting very strangely. Houston temps are in the upper 80s and after an afternoon round of golf yesterday, the car must have been well over 100 inside. I opened the windows as I usually do after I started up but the air didn’t kick in. It’s set on 76 Auto. I switched Max on (for the first time, I think) – still nothing. A few minutes later, it kicks in and cools things down nicely. I switch back to Auto and the fan comes down a couple of notches but gradually fades to nothing. Back to Max and the cycle repeats.
Same thing today.
Anyone seen anything like this? Would be good to have some clues before the inevitable trip to the dealer.
I have the same problem, the AC goes on and off in 3 minute intervals. I realized that it was nothing to do with the AUTO mode, it does it in every single setting. I am calling my dealership about it tomorrow.
I recently experienced the same problem with my HVAC system. The fan will blast cold air for some time and then stop completely even though the set point temperature was not achieved. I took my car in and had the problem resolved. The service representative at Leith BMW told me that he had seen this problem with other vehicles and it is a bad resistor operating the fan speed. The dealership replaced the resistor with a newly designed one.
I had this repaired 5 days ago (04-18-02) and the HVAC system has been running normal again.
A/C tip: the thermostat for the air is above by the universal remote. It's actually inside that compartment and the small rectangular slotted insert is so the AIR can circulate.
For best results set the unit to AUTO and your favorite temp, for me 71 degrees F. Aim the central vents so that the air passes over the slotted insert above by the universal remote and this will cause the fan to settle down faster requiring less fooling with the fan speed.
I used this method on Mercs and BMWs for years and find the A/C more civilized and quiet.
If you get hot you can rotate the vent toward you and later back to the ceiling and thermostat. Hope some of you benefit from this.:byee55amg
