E60 M5 When?

E60 M5?? Called my dealer today...

I got so taken in by the rumors of a 04 E60 M5 I called my guy at the dealer today to put my name on the list and Jerry, my guy, wasn't there. So I got Steve the sales manager and asked if there was a list and if so I'd like to put my name on it. His reply was there was no list and they gave up on lists this early in the game.

He did same some sales people keep tabs for their best customers but not a formal list.

So I asked "when do you think the E60 M5 will be in the show room, he thought and said he was just taking to the factory just yesterday and was told about all the new cars coming out like the 1 series, 6 series and a convertible (not sure which), the new Z5 later this year and so forth.

He said the E60 will be late next year as an 2004 model and explained that the M5 usually comes out in the middle of the model run and concluded that would put it at 2007 model year or late 2006." I said I agree with you I just thought I'd ask.

So, if your waiting for an E60 M5 the wait could be as long as four and a half years from now. Europe may be a year earlier. BMW likes to test new cars there before they come to the pesky and demanding US market. You know, rugged cup holders

Anybody for an SL

If that is true, it will be interesting to see what happens to our M5 values especially in light of the new models coming out. I've got a lease that's up in 05 so I can either buy it out or go for something new. In the meantime, I'm having the time of my life with my current M5. SOOO glad I didn't wait.

Yes very true but that all can change with the release of Mercedes AMG's new 460+bhp e55 next year.

Historically, the mid-model run was accurate but there are some reasons to expect that it might not take so long for the new M5:
1. In general model development times are dropping
2. There's more competition now
3. M is no longer a miniscule part of BMWs biz
4. Ms no longer get built on the sideline, but right along with regular chassis variants

On the other hand, IF E46 M3 engines are going Kaboom!, M could pull back the V10 and rake it over the coals longer before releasing it to production, so who knows....

rvacha, your #4 is the best reason you could be right. None of us know. But I remember the stategy for BMW was to introduce new cars, spaced to bring people into showrooms. This worked so successfully for them, I doubt they would abandon it.

With so many models coming on board the M5 could get squeezed out. After all the update is mostly mechanical.

And I don't really think the M5
competes with E55 or any other 55 car because they are Automatics and that's a different class of car. Of course with the new CTS stick from (hard to say) Cadillac maybe Merc with take notice, GM did.

I think he real deal will be to watch the M6 variant and its impact on sales to muscle car guys like us. Is it show or go

Also, the E46 M3 came sooner that the last and that may be a clue.

I totally agree with this statement, as there's many folks that will want one or the other. Like the MotorTrend article posing the E55 against the M5 where the tester agreed the M5 was best, but it came down to tranny preference...and he liked autos for the city.
Pesonally, I just sold my Jaguar XKR, as I just had to have a manual tranny...and yes, the car was awesome !

BMW can't have a gap in production of an M car, if folks don't have the M option, they might go AMG...and be won over (It could happen, right ?). Lotsa folks won't buy used, just like a dealer will have an M5 on the lot... and it just sits there longer than expect as folks wanna fill-in the build sheet themselves.

And given that one should not buy a car in its first model year (because the bugs have often not been worked out), add yet another year to the E60 M5's release date....

i agree, bmw will wait far less this time for the M model to come out. a lot of companys are offering high end versions of cars right off the bat, seems to be more of a market today than ever. my only question is, why is the resale value for M5s so high if nobody buys them? or at least takes so long to resell them?
