who cares? E39s are cheap now and M bumpers are $400 (front and rear), deal with the fact that people will be buying them. Also, the M-tech kit came on appropriately-optioned 2003 540s from the factory.

Isn't the M5 all about subtlety? Take solace in the fact that 98% of people don't know that your car is any different from the average BMW sedan.

It really doesn't bother me to see the bumpers wheels etc. Let's face it looks much better than the stock non M stuff. An M5 badge on the truck lid though is a :nono:

The White one does look great.

The blue one looks a beast except the wheels are a bit too much for me.

I have no problem with using the M bumpers etc, they look better and are still subtle.

Use of a 'M' badge to me is a lot different to using a 'M5' badge.

You can after all get M stuff as a option when new. Anything bar a actual M5 using the badge is sacrilege. And should be punished by the BMW gods.

As my car has full M5 suspension and front M5 sport seats and the M tricolour stitched wheel, is it worthy of a M badge?
A M5 manual is also on the must do list.

That is the question?

I have the M aero kit from factory but will upgrade later to M5 bumpers. My originals have seen better days.

Does this provide enough actual M5 DNA to justify the use of a 'M' badge?

My philosophy is use the best of the actual M division parts to build the car to my taste.

Similar to a 2003 e39 540/6 in idea.

I also note the last of the special e34 540 to come were the 540LE which were all individually numbered. They contained everything of a M5 six speed except had a M60 instead of s38.

The LE certainly deserves a M badge.

What do you guys think- what is the view out there?

And it would if not for BMW Australia selling e39 540 with M sport kits and M but not M5 badged side moldings.

I really think there is a distinct difference between M and M5.

In years past I had a e28 1985 M528i. Was definitely badged M including wild M side stripes.

This was a Aussie market only model and I am sure it wasn't built in the M factory. Nor was a E39 M5.

Not all cars with a M in the badge had a 's' engine. Various markets around the world had different models.

Yes, M3 and M5 do but not the old M635i in some markets, or my above M528i or my brothers e28 M535 from 1987.

And what of the US e36 M3, sure its badged M3 and has a 'S' motor. But has no 6 throttle bodies.

Many times has BMW used the M in its badge for cars with M bits.

But I can clearly see where the M5 owners are.....If only I had a M5.

The White one is the best clone I have ever seen only if they remove the badge on the back and do 18 inches instead of 19........

I liked the White too. And those wheels- I looked at those for awhile wondering if they were a little bigger or just looked like it in the pic, Ive never seen them in a 19. I like em in a 19. Does anyone know who makes em?

If it has the M5 badge I agree it's wrong but otherwise I see no problem.

The e28 had the M535i which had the m30 engine, the e60 and the e90s have the M Sport models so what's the problem?

I have Alpina alloys on my e38 but still have the 740i badge on the rear. I bought an e34 540iA in 97 it had the sports seats and side skirts and rear bumper it also had an M badge on it not the M5 badge just the M badge. I personally did not like it so removed it but it didn't even cross my mind when I bought it.

We all do mods be it a strut brace or a supercharger and it's our own car so we can do what we want. My e34 is all standard bar the strut brace, my e39 is standard as the BMW warranty restricts mods. The wifes 320i is debadged and looks a lot more than it is and the e38,,,, well I just might go the SC route if funds allow me to do a rebuild first.

Live and let live and let the M gods decide who gets punished take it as a compliment as we have them and they want them:goldcup:

+1

when I first got my M3 years ago, this stuff made me laugh. And kind of get a little mad, I worked hard for my M3 I dont want some punk ripping off my hard work. Same thing when I first got my M5. I worked hard for this - i dont like these posers!

Then I realized - who cares? Enthusiasts know to laugh at them, non-enthusiasts dont care. Now when I see cars badged as Ms when they arent, I ask them about the high-compression S54 and invite them to race. They usually just sit there like... ??????

I pulled up to a kid a few weeks ago (likely 18-20) in a very convincing M5 fake. He had the wheels, front and rear bumpers, round side mirrors, and ///M5 on the trunk. Missing were the side molding badges, oval rear view mirror, and two exhaust pipes. As I rolled up next to him at the light I just looked over and smiled at him. The embarrassed look on his face was priceless. Like catching a kid with his hand in the cookie jar :S

I don't get bent out of shape over it....I just think it's funny, especially when I get to demonstrate the beautiful sound of my Timmay tips as I pull away from him

Now, imagine these kids pulling up next to my debadged M5. You guess the end results. :M5launch::byee55amg
