Bilstein HD shock review

After lengthy searching it seems that there was not a good simple replacement for factory shocks (Koni yellows don’t fit into this category imo and would never put a set on my car). I did some research and picked up a set of the bilstein HD shocks from turner for the 540i. If they fit the 540i they fit the M5. Also the valving is the same as they are for factory shocks (part number is the same for both cars). Why bilstein doesn't list this as a direct replacement for the M5 is beyond me but they fit perfectly as expected.

My goal was for a factory quality ride since this is my DD. No coilovers. Over the weekend I installed them with new oem hardware, GC camber plates & bg lowering springs, eibach rear sway and the ride is night and day better as expected. My car currently has 70k miles. No more rattling or jarring just nice quiet

Also you do not have to get the bilstein sport shocks with lowering springs as many say. The Hd's are fine and they don't bottom out or ride on the bump stops. The sports will have harsher ride than the HD's (advice from another enthusiast that has installed both)

If you want a true replacement for factory shocks I highly recommend these. I paid $550 from turner for the shocks, $200 for the springs, $150 for the rear sway, $250 ish for the oem hardware, $400 for the camber plates and installed it all myself. I'll address the control arms in the spring but for now $1,200-$1300 the car is back to stock comfort levels with much improved turn in with a reduction of understeer. The lowered stance with B&G springs looks great too (with 15mm front and 10mm rear spacers)

Hope this helps anyone that just wants to replace the stock shocks and doesn’t want to put in factory again.

Note: The shocks don't come with boots like the pictures. Picked up some proline boots in light blue from summit for $5

I am about to install the same set you did, except I bought konis vs your HD. They haven't been installed yet but I would like to know how you concluded the Konis are less comfortable.

I've had experience with yellows on a different platform (blown shocks & ride quality). Adjustable? Not really. Put on a shock dino (along with pss9's) and got some interesting results about what actually is happening when you adjust them. Its all in your head :) Please don't pile on as I know how much people push & love them here. Surprisingly the the oem stuff that was tested was better than 90% of the aftermarket stuff!

I'm not trying to talk you or anyone into anything else that was just my personal experience. I recently drove an e39 M5 S1 which has them and the ride was not as comfortable as my car imo. More jarring if that makes sense. This car has 30k miles on it to so all the rubber mounts etc are in much better condition than mine as well. Again just my opinion

Hope this helps

Please tell me the differences in the struts M5 vs 540.....valving, internal fluids???????

My inquiring mind wants to know.

Randy

They are the same when searching via the part numbers. Now I'm sure the part number has been updated since the car is a few years old now. Whether or not they were the same when they first came out can be debated but it would seem they are now the exact same part. Doesn't surprise me at all that they would be exactly the same

Spartin,

This sounds like what I am needing to do on my car......Having a bad back (the reason I bought a cushey ol" fart car in the first place, hey this excuse worked for my wife) I don't want any rougher ride at all but.........if it handling is improved, all the better.
Could you take a picture or two of the car to see the "lowered look" this set up will give you......are the camber plates necessary because
the lowered springs change the geometry and are the wheel spacers necessary or just for looks.........any chance you could give part numbers off your receipts still not sure what all factory hardware to buy....when I looked at the eibach web page I didn't see one for the M5s yet everyone one the board likes the change.
This will be the last time in my lifetime I will ever need these parts changed and REALLY would like to get it all correct the first time around.

Thanks for all the good info,

Randy

My overall "handling" was improved due to increased camber in the front and the larger rear roll bar which help decrease understeer which in then made turn in much much better imo. Camber plates are not required at all. I highly rec them but they are not required. Eibach only sells the rear bar for the 540i but of course if fits our cars perfectly. I couldn't find the rear bar sold seperatly so I bought the kit (front and rear bar) then sold the front bar so my rear cost me $150 new at the end

If you want a more comfortable ride due to worn out shocks just get a set of the HD's and call it a day. If you want a lowered look grab up some springs from B&G or Dinan, they pop up on the for sale section often but are reasonably priced new as well.

Hope this helps

the M5 springs are also stiffer than the 540.
So the Bilstein shocks for the 540i might have issues with the moderately stiffer M5 springs.

I think one of the options for Bilstein (between HD vs. Sport) is for "stiffer and lower springs".
So an M5 spring is stiffer and lower than a 540 spring. So maybe the Bilstein is OK ?

I wonder if the reverse is true..... Lets say that I want a firmer ride than the HD can offer, but I am not lowering the car...

I have about 120,000 on my car, and the shock absorbers need replacing (with associated gromets etc). I am wondering if the bilstein actually improves the car from stock. I only ask this coz the M5 engineers did do their homework when they first designed the car, and given that I am in the uk, the potholes, and generally lousy roads benefit from a slightly softer shock than a harder shock. Please let me know what you think.

Yeah presuming they are oem replacement for 'M sports suspension II' on the 540. I'm guessing it's the suspension from the sport models in the UK. Not sure about the states. I think it's safe to assume bilstein would base thiers on the sport version.
