Maintenance question
Hi all. I am approaching 10,000 miles and was wondering what are the maintenance concerns I should have? I am suppossed to get my oil changed at 10K miles right? Anything else I should have the dealer look at? Thanks!

How many service interval indicator do you have left?
My SA told me that close to one year mark, I can request a free oil change regardless of how many bars I have. I just pass 6600miles and I only have 2 bars dissapeard.

In ordinary cars, with ordinary oil, 3000 miles is a good idea. With the high-priced synthetic in our cars, BMW lets you go longer.
Of course, if you want to, you can change it every 3K, provided you don't mind dropping $100 at the dealer every time. It can't do anything but good.

Keith,
You do not need to change at 10k. Certainly you can if you want to though. The service indicator lights will let you know when the car thinks it needs it's oil changed. I'm thinking it should come around 12-13k, but that's a guess and it depends on the driving conditions.

Keith,
There is no need to do anything until the service interval lights go out.

My dealership gives you a free oil change if the interval is over a year. Try asking about that. Regardless of how many bars or lights are on the dash.
I had them change it before that one year period and paid $127 for the service! High due to the cost of the 60 weight racing Castrol.
Regards,
DWP

Your owner's manual (p. 144 of the 2001 edition) recommends that even if you drive 6,200 miles or less per year, you change the oil at least once every 2 years.
Although the oil may last longer than 3,000 miles, many owners would advise that you at least change the filter every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. There's a good write up on synthetic vs. synthetic blends and oil service in a recent Roundel.
