that dosent make a lot of sense, you shouldn't have even been able to bolt that flywheel up incorrectly. seems like it cant possibly sit flush against the end of the crank if the dowel isn't lined up correctly. is that new flywheel a oe bmw part?

I have heard that the flywheel needed to be "indexed onto the crank" but I didn't know exactly what they were talking about. Now I know. Thanks for the post (both of them).

What i don't understand though... what's the point of an alignment dowel on the crank that lets the flywheel be mounted in any one of nine positions - what's that all about
It only bolts up correctly in ONE position. The dowel ONLY fits into the larger bolt hole opening......

I never told anyone about that BTW.....

The dowel is just made out of aluminum and crushed under the pressure folding itself into the opening of the flywheel. It was a PITA getting it out. The flywheel was sitting flush, I did measure and check that. I removed the crushed dowel and installed a new one.

Good info Tim, thanks for sharing! This is good info we can add to our knowledge base, so we can at least learn from it. Glad it was something minor as we hoped.

By the time I need a new clutch, we'll be able to do it in no time flat!

Thanks for being so upfront Tim. Ill take ownership of "information cracks" as I am the one who talked to Steve that day. I ruled out the flywheel with Steve on the phone. I did that out of ignorance and assuming that it couldnt be possible to put the fly wheel on wrong. Thats not saying YOU did anything wrong Tim. I just didnt know it was possible for ANYONE to put it on wrong.

Im sorry Phil, Im sorry Steve and Im sorry to you too Tim.

Dude, don't apologize. I didn't believe it either until the WHOLE THING was explained to me. I was miffed at Raza for accusing me of doing it until the little smartazz explained to me how he knew it. Little turd. Gotta love the kid though. It would have taken Steve talking to me, explaining the whole thing to me before I would have got it. No one is to blame but me for doing it wrong......

I think you are only entitled to be flamed if you do it a second time

It was an interesting puzzle while it lasted.

Good information to know for when it comes time to replace my clutch. Most of the flywheels I've installed only go on one way, usually because one or two holes are offset.

Sounds like it would be an easy miss with cranking the flywheel on and all that...It shows cojones to admit the boo-boo..As it was pointed out earlier, many wouldn't have "fessed up" to the act..Class act..Plus 3 out of 4 ain't bad..
