750 iL, 850Ci.........

Coming back from Warsaw today was pretty interesting! I came upon a very nice looking 850Ci The driver was about 40 years old and was really pushing it. He entered the highway and punched in front of me, so i hit it too . When we were up to about 220 he let me pass and i showed him the way! he could stay up woth me until 240 later i just kept leaving him behind.
And then at a stop light there was a nice looking (maybe 1999) 750 iL, this guy was younger and he had no idea there was an M5 behind him. He accelarated quickly to around 120 km/h and then i saw his passenger look back when he punched it hard.
He could not belive me passing him after all he's got a 750 and he propobaly thought i had a 530 diesel!! , but i gave him a nice suprise!! .
I lead the three of us for another 100 km, they stayed back and just thumbs up when i was turning off the highway.
So my day was good, nobody can take the beast out on the street! it's just the best!!

robert.

A normal 850 Ci is not match at all for the M5, but an 850 CSi,
specially a modified one can give you a very hard battle ;-)

I have started slowly to write a post comparing the 850 CSi
with the M5. In my opinion these are two completely different
cars to drive. When it comes to aerodynamic design the E31
is light years ahead of the E39.

I love my E39 M5, but something I really miss is the aerodynamic
characteristics of the E31. Going at really high speeds with the
M5 requires bigger concentration due to the effects of the air
on the car. The E31 seems untouched by it feels equally stable
at VERY high speeds. I really miss that car...

Just some comments...

Best regards,

Fedde

I love when the passenger turns round and looks at your car before they "try" to accelerate..makes it more personal when you overtake them
Great story robert

All the best

Fedde, while I agree with you that aerodinamics are different designed for the e-31 and the e-39, as a previous e-31 owner too let me disagree on just one point:

stock suspension (EDC included) on the 850i is a lot more softer than the M5, and to me it was the opossite. The 850 felt more unsteady at high speeds (200-250 km/h range) than the M5 does to me. I have had the M5 up to (claimed by the speedo) 290 km/h and I was still able to drive one-handed, music on, and enjoy the rush (it was taken on video by my step-daughter, but I cannot download it from the camera...grrrrr...)

Your 850 was a UNIQUE MASTERPIECE, and I think not comparable to a humble, regular 850. Maybe if you stiffen the M5's suspension (just a bit), then you'll have the same feel as you were used to, but again, stock against stock, my personal experience is a no match.

Now, talk about wind-noise and ride up to 200 km/h and overall feel, the M5 looses against the 850 imho. But, most important of it all, the line of the 850 is still one of the very best ever designed, and I also miss mine!!!

my 0.02 anyway...

Dear Marcelo,

You are perfectly correct in your observation regaring an 850 Ci,
but the CSi is a completely different car. I remember people in
the 850 board a while ago making this observation as well. The
CSi has a completely different feeling when steering, it has
different suspension, spoilers, etc, etc. When I had the 850 Ci
I was also disappointed as it didn't feel as rock steady as I had
heard, but with the 850 CSi is was a different matter. A friend
of mine once compared the feeling of driving the CSi as a "toad
glued to the ground" I an possitive manner that is

But for the 850 Ci your observation is perfectly correct...

Best regards,

Fedde

That was exactly my point Fedde, you were/are used to your tuned Csi (again, a unique masterpiece), so comparing it directly to the stock M5 is not quite the same. MArcelo
ps. are you off for your trip today?
