Some time ago, when I turned on the car, my OBC display would come up (under the speedometer) and stay on in whatever mode I had been previously using it (clock, date, range, etc.).
Something changed, and now it is blank everytime I start the car. I have to turn it on manually.
Anyone know how to set this feature so it stays on? I looked in the manual, but can't seem to find the answer.
I think this is one of those BMW features where each car is "customized" to work the way it happens to work. My 2002 M5 doesn't remember the settings, my 2001 X5 does. The X5 didn't have NAV. I'd say whatever way it is BMW will say that is correct, at least that is what my dealer tells me...some do and some don't.

Ohhh, now I get it.

Must be Microsoft programming.

Good question. I've been puzzled about mine as well. For more than a year after I got my June '00 build, the OBC would always start up with the split screen read-out. In the last 6 months or so, it's been hit or miss. About half the time the OBCstarts with the menu screen, the other half of the time with the split screen. Don't have a clue as to what triggered the change and why it's no longer consistent. It does seem that, when it starts with the menu screen, the audio takes a few seconds longer to kick in than when it goes directly to the split screen. Sorry I don't have a solution, but I semi-share your problem it seems.

When I got my car, it had v17 and the OBC in the dashboard did come on. When I upgraded to v18.0 it still came on..but however one day I happened to hold down the "B" button that selects through the different dashboard messages and "PROG" appeared on the dashboard display. Puzzled I looked over at my nav screen only to find a list of all the different options such as time, date, stopwatch, etc. with a checkmark next to it. There's also a "delete all" option too. Out of curiosity I clicked on "delete all" and all of the checkmarks disappeared. Uh-oh I thought to myself so I went ahead and clicked on each of the checkmarks having no idea what they did. The next time I started my car I noticed that the dashboard no longer came on by itself. EEK! I thought to myself! So that's what the PROG is for..to turn on/off each of the individual options but at the cost of no longer having the dashboard OBC come on automatically. One thing I can think of is to put v17 back in place and then upgrade again! Maybe that would bring things back to the way it was before? I haven't been able to find anyone with a copy of v17 though.

The question is, how to get it back........have you tried "rechecking" all the boxes yet?
thanks,

I even tried rechecking the boxes in the same order it was before. See, the display shows whatever you set it to show in the order you check the boxes. For instance, if you check the "time" box then the "stopwatch" then it will go in that chronological order. No such luck in bringing it back.
Only way I can think of to fix this problem would be to actually reinstall v17 and then upgrade to v18 > v18.2.
Darn, I was hoping for an answer, not a question My '02 has always had this "feature". My '99 540i without nav did remember the last setting. Atomic80 definitely found the deal. Aparently The MID was orginally programmed to remember but when he did the "MID program function", it must have inserted the new 18.0 code that causes the problem. Good guess, atomic, being a programmer myself, I'd bet that programming the MID with older software fixes the problem. Does anyone have the 18.1 (I think that's the latest) and know whether it fixes the problem.
Here is an assignment for you folks with 18.1. Program the MID and let us know whether the display remembers correctly.
BTW, I've also noticed that after using the radio controls on the wheel, that turning off the radio also blanks the MID.
