Garage Design Question . . .

This is a long-term (2-3 years into the future) project but I wanted the board's input so I can start developing proposals for my architect. I am planning on building a separate structure for a car garage. We live on appr. 25 acres so the footprint of the structure is not an issue (as he said without consulting his wife). :-)

Some rough parameters are:

Room for storage of approximately 12 cars (3-4 track or cars and 8-9 street cars);

2-4 Rotary Lifts (one or two two post lifts, one fourpost lift, one or two in ground lifts);

At least two bays with drainage and ventilation so I can wash the cars indoors (I live in Oregon, so you can do the math in terms of the number of days I can wash the cars outside);

Good overhead and side lighting for detailing and repair work;

Heating and cooling (in or above ground radiant heat);

Utilities and provision for compressed air lines, air tools, electricity for welders, plasma cutters, etc.;

Ample storage/cabinets for tools, cleaning supplies, parts, etc; and

A media room/living area so the area can double as a living space/office.

In spite of these lofty goals I am admittedly clueless when it comes to garage design. Have any of you found some good resources (magazines, internet, personal projects involving something similar) to provide some examples or templates for garage ideas? I have found www.ultimategarage.com which is a great site but the it understandably does not provide much in the way of real word examples or ideas.

Thanks for your input, even if it's to tell me I'm insane.

/Rich

Calling Bart!

He's in the middle of having a 10 car garage built right now! He'd be a good person to ask about this.

Also, a good resource would be to check out the Ultimate Garage too.

Give Steve D'Gerolamo (the guru of the Ultimate Garage) a call: 201-262-0412. He's very knowledgable and may be available right now for consulting work. He has experience in all kinds of projects, from simple 2 car garages to 25 car garages with unlimited budgets. His website isn't very well updated and there aren't a whole lot of examples of his work, but I've seen informal photographs and they are excellent. Edit: I just checked out his site and there are a few entries in his portfolio of projects. http://www.ultimategarage.com/consult.html. They're quite impressive!

As far as I know, these garages were not bulit by Steve, but I'm quite sure that he can help you out if they are to your liking:

Get a good 4-post lift. Don't let this happen to you:

D'ooohhh

I feel bad for that poor Corvette in that last picture!

But man...wow! What a sweet setup! Now I know what to ask Santa for. It's still a long ways before Christmas so that'd give him enough time to build that garage for me! I want those checkered floors!

Uh, yeah, I think this item is so you have a warm comfortable place to stay when your wife gets angry that you spend too much time in the garage, "Why don't you just move in with your cars!" "Uh... OK."

Funny, I've gone through the exact same thing myself. As mentioned by Louv, one thing you'll want to add is an office / room. Perhaps do it on the show area. WIll this be one-story or two?

Also, do set aside a show-car area, as well as possibly a mechanics / workshop area where you can tool around on 2 open projects at once with room to spare. Glad to see you've covered the washing bays.

I did draw up plans myself, which I'd be happy to send to you, but they called for something a little larger (the idea was to fill it with 20 cars, with the ability to stretch to about 24 if need be).
