Do you see how they're constructed? Each muffler has it's own tip. Leaving one on each side would eliminate one tip, looking ridiculous IMO. It's not loud unless you want it loud. If you keep it under 3k RPMS (aka normal driving to me) it's a deep burble that isn't going to be offensive to anyone. It's only if you hammer it that you get the roar of the M5.
