GROUP BUY, 3.45 differential

I found a local shop (www.bimmerworld.com) that sells differentials for our cars. I know that there was considerable interest in these.

He said on a group buy, depending on how many we get, we should be able to get them for around 2K.

Anyone interested?

what's the difference between these ones and the Dinan one besides price?

Nothing as I can tell. I called and asked that exact question. He said for other cars it might or might not be the same, but for E39 M5s, it would be exactly the same thing.

Also, just like the Dinan, there's the whole core thing, as they send out a complete diff. not just gears. Also, the warranty is 3 yr/ 36K.

ahh... the warranty is good, but then I presume it only covers the diff... If for example the driveshaft breaks, BMW can blame the diff on it....

If they can do custom gears, can you ask them to make another gear ratio? like 3.75 instead of 3.45?

Yes, he said he can do different gears ratio's.

3.63, 3.73, and 3.91 should be possible with a price in the same range.

He did recommended the 3.45 though, and that most people where getting those for the 'bigger' bimmers.

I would go with 3.63 or even 3.73s if I decided to do it over again. The 3.45s are good, but I could give up a little more top end for a quicker car.....

SouthShore -

3.76 would give you to much thrust to stay hooked up in 1st. Might be fun if all you care about is 2/3 stuff, but you might want to consider bigger tires. Also, 2 would top out at 56mph @ 7000 RPM.

Overkill?

I'm interested, but only if it comes off pretty quick. I was actually going to place an order from Dinan in the next couple of days.

Greg: You are right, likely it's overkill. I grew up (well, I got older anyway)) with American muscle cars running big blocks with 4 speeds and 4.11s. God I loved those 2-3 bursts! I wonder if a sticky rear tire a little wider would let me launch without too much smoke?
