An oil consumption success story!

Like most folks, for the first 8000 or so miles I've noticed burning a quart every 1-2k miles. Well, last week I crossed the big 10k mark (in under 6 months ) and I noticed this morning that the last few times I've checked the level over the last 1-2k miles it hasn't dropped a bit

I haven't done anything particularly special, I followed the break-in instructions according to the manual and windshield sticker, even making a 200-mile highway trip the day I bought it to bring it home (slightly varied speed and gear selection almost constantly, though), and making a 1000+ mile trip to FL and back right after my 1200 miles service at a brisk pace.

I use the BMW Synth 5w30 that the underhood sticker and manual recommends at roughly 7000 mile intervals. (nice, since that's the same oil the Z3 takes - we're finally a 1-oil household again!)

It seems that BMW has really addressed the issue for 2002. My car was built in the last couple weeks of Sept 2001 if that matters.

my car has been the same as well.. about a quart every 2k miles, and then once it reached 10,000 miles, it stopped drinking oil... I haven't yet put in any more oil once the car past 10,000 miles... :p

Great to hear some positive comments on the oil consumption issue that seems to plague our cars. Hopefully, new owners will read your words and take heed. Again, it's common sense 101 that will reward you during ownership and in the event that you'd want to sell your M5.

Thanks for sharing!

Ditto here, too. I haven't lost a drip of oil since about 8,000 miles or so
