SNOW!!!

The first snow of the season arrived very late this year.

Just a taste so far, but my 215 snow tires are making a lot more sense now They are predicting 7-8 inches but usually the weather folks are overly pessimistic.

Also not all projects are successful. I decided to build a new exhaust for my car, which was much larger than what I started with. After I finished it I put on the car and it was TOO LOUD I was worried that this might be the case, but given the lack of people with similar set-ups there was no way to know so I built it to find out for myself I drove the car around for about 10 minutes and took the exhaust off and returned the original exhaust which is staying on there.

"experimental exhaust"

Original exhaust:

add more resonators to your new exhaust, I bet that quiets it down a bit. A single, presumably straight-thru, muffler isn't going to do much. I mean, the OEM-modified setup has one giant Y resonator, one Helmholtz resonator, and one giant muffler.

Inexpensive setups I've had decent luck with are made with Vibrant components:
Vibrant Performance ::.
Vibrant Performance ::.
Vibrant Performance ::.

If you want to spend ridiculous money look at Burns Stainless or other such brands

That muffler isn't a straight through design - it is the Dynomax VT "Drone Free" muffler, neat idea, but even at idle it was too loud for my taste. Adding resonators wasn't going to do anything.

Right now the car is just about as quiet as a stock Camry and I have decided that it is going to stay that way

I assume your goals here are to free up some power while maintaining silence - I can fully appreciate the goal.

Have you thought about a stock M5-ish setup? Or running duals all the way back?

If you can make an FI'd 600hp LSx work like nearly stock in an E39, Surely you can make a quiet, higher-flowing exhaust.

But, maybe it just pains me to see all that stainless and fabrication sit on a garage wall/floor

I mean the damn thing has "proper" cats (I think), and O2 sensors and all that stuff.

The current exhaust has proper cats, 6 o2 sensor bungs and is all stainless as well

A M5 style exhaust or duals would be nice but I can't see a way to do that without cutting the trunk, which I don't really want to do. I am open to suggestions though.

I am also not certain just how much benefit a larger exhaust would really have - there is lots of theory but no one really knows. My car doesn't exactly fall on its face at higher RPMs
