Cheap project or just a huge money pit?

This is up on ebay at the moment. Vanos needs doing and lord knows what else. My own view is that you could easily throw thousands at it and still be left with a 181k car with a partial history....
The alternative view is that somebody with a sound DIY ability could maybe get a real bargain that still has a few years of fun left in it on the cheap?
Thoughts gentlemen?

100%,brother!

I would say 3.5k and dismantle.

180k and the bit Vanos rattle is only the tip of the iceberg,me thinks...

This car is only possible to drive for someone with alot of DIY experience on the M5 and at least 5k£ aside for repairs that will occure...

And even then good chance it is still more money pit than bargain...

Certainly worth a look for that price. They'll never get a lot of $ for it with those miles, but that doesn't mean the car is a lemon. You do have service history to 140k also.

I know it's pretty exciting when you see a M5 E39 for such a price. But I think it's even not worth 3k pounds for 2,5k you could buy it for spare parts. But I think the seller has readed everything about the E39 M5 and maybe he has tried to solve the problem on his own. But he gave up after he has tried everything possible for him, and he knew that he would get more if he sells the whole car then only the spare parts. But I have to agree it's definitely worth a look maybe you'll be able to lower the price more than anybody would expect.

Look, if it really was purely as easy as a few quid to Dr Vanos and a breezy afternoon of wrenching, then they would do it. I suspect that they suspect that they could be into all kinds of issues (can you say 'chain guides'?) and still not be done with it.

If you need a parts, go for it- but they are 180K mile parts....

Honestly it would make a great fun car for the track. You can get a used but good running motor for it and swap it. That way when your racing it around on the track it will really go and you dont have to worry about bangin it up. Plus gutting cars and making them track ready is fun!! Just an idea.

But if you do get it send us your mirrors so we can make molds to make Carbon Fiber mirrors. 8)
