SES light: DME returned from Germany

Well, I took my car in to the dealership to address a few problems- one of which, was that my SES light had come on again. They attempted to download new software into the DME (the central "brain" of the car) and it wouldn't load. Then they tried uploading older software and that wouldn't work, so they removed the DME and shipped it to Germany to have it programed there. In the meantime, a pressure release valve associated with the O2 sensor was replaced.

The DME has come back from Germany and I now have my car. Since it's only been 2 days, I'm not sure if sending the DME to Germany is the ultimate solution, but it is now an option my dealership is doing to address the SES light issue.

The crazy thing about my situation is I seem to have as many SES issues as my fellow Boston M5er's, but my car has not been modified at all!
        Go figure?

        ALX

PS. One crazy side note: whenever I unlock the car with the remote key, my steering will telescopes out regard less of how many times I save my preferred steering position into my memory slot. Anyone know what's up with that???

Great to hear that your car came back Alex, no more light? My car is going in on Monday for the same service, I will let you know whether they decide to void my warranty!! hahah!

I am a bit unsure about that telescoping wheel thing, it seems a bit odd.

I all is well with you car! Psssst, F1 Brazil at Black's house tomorrow, are you in?

Bone Stock baby, it's the new 'black!'

I think you are all right- I'm waiting for the call from DH on the X-pipe. Orlando has me programmed into his cell phone so when it comes in, it'll go in!

Now my bloody steering wheel keeps telescoping out of place when ever I unlock the car! If it's not one thing, it's another! Anyone experience this?

Also, the steering on the loaner 525ia I had is much tighter in feel than on my M5! What's the deal there?.... Hey 'Rocket, I may have to go Porsche!

        ALX:

The reason the steering on the 525 was better then the M5 was due to the rack & pinion versus the power-assisted recirculating ball system in the M5. Hmm, Porsche huh. What model are you thinking about?

Porshce, Eh? I can personally vouch for the safety of the Boxster

The telescoping wheel problem has been reported before on other E39s. There's a control module that needs to be replaced. Your warranty should cover it.

        TCM & AMP,

Thanks for the info on the steering. I'll ask the dealership to take care of it ASAP.

As for the Porsche, last thursday 'Rocket and I test drove an '02 911 C2- it was the first time I drove a Porsche and I loved it! I got her upto 145mph on the Pike- I know it was foolish, but I wanted to see what she could do! The brakes are phenomenal! You press and you stop. Period. I found clutch to be plain weird , but I had no problem rev matching and hitting all my shift points. The engine sound is so shuh-weet!

So in the end I loved the C2, but I am really intrigued about what the TT will do... After I drive the TT, I'll make a choice.

Lastly, the test drive made me appreciate my M5 even more. The practical utility of the M5 is fanatastic- I'm sure the sales guy (in the back seat of the 911) would have been more comfortable !

        Long live the beast!!!

I have been spoiled by the beast's low-end torque, I nearly stalled the C2 at the toll booth!

        Long live the beast!!

OK guys, you need to come up here with the TT and I will show you some fun back roads where you can really test the car out. Plus the fact that I want to ride in it . ALX, I know I really have no authority to speak considering I do not even have an M5, but isn't the C2 a bit of a downgrade from the Beast. I say go for the TT if you can !
