New Radiator shroud and new fog light port

So I finally made a little time to install Peter's (Herrubermensch) fog lights. This came with a shorter plastic cover - you can see my intake air filter right behind the bumper. I hope Timmay does his vent for the wheelwell and I will put that in too.

The other thing I did recently was have a custom shroud made for the Zionsville radiator. We put in a Spal low profile fan. I think that we may have to do a little more to keep it cool. The fan is only about 1800 CFM and I think I need more like 2500 CFM. I am also thinking about doing a remote oil cooler and heat exchanger blockoff a la Dinan S3.

What exactly did you have done to make the shroud "custom"?? What were the fitment issues with the standard Zionsville shroud??

Yeah the standard shroud left no room for a fan with the SC setup.

I know the ESS guys have run into this problem, so they had to reposition the SPAL fan on the shroud. I spoke with Zionsville who said they could move the circular cutout for the fan anywhere on the shroud. Is that what you had done??

I assume it was the fan motor that was contacting the pulley?? What was changed on the shroud?? Is it just the low profile fan that was changed?? I have not found a thinner fan that can pull 2500+ CFM, what is your plan for a better fan??

Please elaborate. Excuse my tone, but you started a thread for this so please share some details..

What exactly would the heat exchanger block off do? I saw that in Peter's thread but I wasn't quite sure what it's advantage was.

I began fabrication on Steve's vent, so far it isn't going exactly as I had it planned in my head. I sent a few embarrassing photos to Steve of it, but will more than likely scrap that unit and go a different route.

Radiator looks great btw. SO CLEAN......

The heat exchanger block off kit removed the under-plenum oil heat exchanger, which removes the heat from under the plenum that the heat exchanger generates. You then need an external oil cooler, which one could use the "Gulf" oil filter housing to install or you can simply tap the lines from the existing housing. Most of us who have done this (MikeOski, Havausteve) have used the Gulf oil filter housing then mounted the external oil cooler behind the kidney grills. Works very well to keep oil temps down as well, though it's principal advantage is to remove under-plenum heat, which heats up the plenum, which heats up intake air, which decreases its density and with it, engine performance. (How's THAT for a run-on sentence!)

For an FI car, you want to keep the incoming charge as cold as possible, so putting heat there under the plenum goes against what you are doing with the intercooler. Plus our FI motors run hotter, so the oil will cool better externally via the external core. My main problem is where to put it since my kidney space is taken up with the radiator and intercooler - space is tight in there.

Hi Mike - I have a modest oil heat exchanger in front of the large water intercooler, and still managed to squeeze in the nitrous fogger, although the later is not positioned as optimally as yours. You might consider re-positioning the fogger to accommodate a flat oil heat exchanger, as heat seems more a pressing problem in SoCal than a perfect but discretionary fogger system. A heat exchanger in front of a heat exchanger is obviously not perfect either, but I think it works ok (as evidenced by significantly lowered after-cooler air temp.) Abdulla had the oil heat exchanger installed to help deal with 100+F heat in Bahrain.

An ideal set up might be the S3 oil cooler down below, but I don't know about the geometry/space requirements vis-a-vis our set up.

Dave
