Nick, very curious to see your rod bearings as yours ran quite long with a 7750rpm limiter!
Good choice on doing it,mate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:goldcup:cherrsagai
Side note:
We went for a midnight coffe yesterday at a gas station where usually also some car guys meet.
One of our friends just bought an M5 and we change his bearings also at 170k km...
And a guy showed up with a 16k km velvet blue M5....lovelovelovelove
For a first timer, calculate two days if you do it anal(means taking upper oil pan apart and cleaning everything you have in your hands before it goes back in,also a food time to replace the center tie rod and the outer tie rods of the steering and trailing arms when subframe is off, anyway!)
Only "special" tools needed are good torque wrenches ranging from 5NM to 140NM,a Torx E12 and E14 socket, measuring equpment for crank journals and rods, plastigauge for rod clearance and a torque angle tool.
Raikku, I'm glad you are getting so much practice in changing rod bearings. Now just swim on over here and I'll meet you at the NC beach. You can probably swap mine out in say, 30-45 minutes??
Raikku - if you ever want to take a holiday here in Iceland - you can spend like
2 days servicing/replacing parts in my M5 and in exchange I´ll lend you my
Patrol 4x4 for travelling.
Nothing and nowhere compares to the center of the world--New York City!!! Moreover, I think engine removal and replacement is infinitely more interesting than merely changing rod bearings. So come to NYC and remove and replace my engine, Raikku! Nuff said!
Heck I was gonna take him down to that same boardwalk from Jersey Shore. Get him a few slices of '3 Brothers Pizza' then cruise over to the Tiki Bar or Bar A. Maybe shoot up the Turnpike to the 'Bada-Bing' (real strip club...fake name). You know...that kinda stuff. Maybe a quick trip the the Philly Art Museum so he can see the big bronze Rocky statue and run up the steps too. Yo Adrian!
just from the few pictures of the cranks "color" and the areas surrounding it show this car has seen longer oil change intervals and driven harder then average. it would be fair to disclose the history before all the rod bearing fanboys go changing more parts that dont need changing.
it is funny though how 4 engines ive cracked open have never had any bearings that look like that, the highest milage being 140k. the internals looked brand new if i might add, ill see if i can find the bearings somewhere in the shop.
just some food for thought guys, take it for what its worth.
Hmm. Round trip ticket from Finland to Seattle is say $1200. Throw in some compensation for lodging, food, booze, etc. My dad has a nice shop with a 4-point lift, air tools, and plenty of parking. The cost per car could be pretty cheap...are there any other M5s in the Northwest who would chip in for a patented VantaaM5 group bearing change?
Tradin - im thinking this is like cheap insurance. I dont know if its only certain cars and people that have posted pics here on the internet but each one has had visibly worn rod bearings.
No way! you know that sexual diseases are airborn on those boats? ;-)
But it sound like a way to solve it! I send you a pm if I make the trip, are you in Vaanta ? stupid question maybe regarding to your nickname but people can move ;-)
