I got home yesterday and pulled the dipstick and the oil level seems to be slightly higher than max limit on the dipstick. I drained some of the oil so that the level is somewhere in the middle of the gauge.

This morning on my way to work I noticed my oil temp on 300 . I pulled over and pulled the dipstick and level was normal. Waited for about 2-3 minutes and restarted the engine. Oil temp gauge was back down below 210.

I'm guessing it is the oil temperature sensor. Any thoughts?

Wow thats frightening! It sounds like it might be the sensor. It would probably take a bit of effort to really get the oil to 300F.

I was not too concerned since I checked the oil level before leaving the house. I suspected it is oil temp sensor.

Hey Glenn. I dont have PM access yet as I do not have 75 posts under my belt.

I have never replaced this part myself - but im pretty sure this is the correct part - if in fact oil temperature and oil level are the same sensor.

12-61-7-508-003-M44

Pelican Parts - Product Information: 12-61-7-508-003-M44

The only BMW shop in our area that I would recommend is Bimmerclinic in Elizabeth NJ if you don't want to tackle the job yourself. (I'm sure there are others but I have not had experience with other shops)

Good luck!
-Dave

Does anyone know if I need to remove the lower oil pan to replace the oil level sensor?

No need to remove the lower oil pan.

Drain oil and then all you need is a 10mm socket to remove the bolts of the sensor, disconnect it,new one in,connect it,oil in,fine

The sensor is attached to the oil pan with three bolts(sse pic on the left side)

Yup, this started happening with me over the weekend. Total thread revival here since there has not been a post in here since 2010, but I would assume if its happening to me, it may start happening with others soon.

I guess I will have to order the sensor part since checking the oil do not indicate oil levels are low at all.

The "sensor" you are trusting doesn't even check the oil level ... it checks for a change in temperature (you can read that where I did, in the BMW E39 M5 TIS explanation of how it works).

A lack of a dipstick is the only reason I didn't buy an E60 ... well, the other reason, truth be told, is that they are buttt ugly.
Just had to repost this from John Clyman, may he rest in peace. For the newer folks on the board, John was a stalwart, extremely erudite, and a thorough BMW enthusiast. In addition, he was a truly fine fellow who continues to be missed very much. Finally, as the above quotation shows, he was a bit of a pistol and held an opinion of the aesthetics of the E60 M5 with which I thoroughly agree.

We miss you, John.
