Gauge Cluster Noise
My gauge cluster seems to have developed a scratching noise since it was repaired for the pixel issue...which is still AFU.
Sounds like my old 82 Impala when it needed a new speedometer cable.

Anyone know what this is?

Some additional information will help such as if it is while driving (i.e. when the speedometer is registering) or at a specific RPM. There is nothing ever spinning in the cluster and there is no speedometer cable in the E39 M5 so rest assured you do not need a new cable. It could sound like it is in the cluster but be someting else entirely.

Also, where was your cluster repaired?

It happens from about 15 mph and up most of the time. Stops once the car stops. Sounds like a record needle that reached the end of the record. Scratch, scratch, scratch. Seems to increase with speed.
Does not seem to be RPM dependant.

The cluster was repaired by www.BMWClusterRepair.com Twice. And it still is not right.

I could remove the cluster and go drive it...see if I can narrow it down.

This might sound ridiculous but using a subwoofer in your car for troubleshooting rattling isn't a bad idea.

Figured it out.
The AC idler pulley bolts broke in the block and caused the pulley to become misaligned...belt broke...took out the other belt...busted the fan...took out the radiator.

I think what I was hearing was the AC belt coming apart.

Hope this doesn't happen to anyone else!
