I think it is a personal choice. I know that there is no harm in changing the oil more often, just on your check book . About half the guys on this board pay for it. I personally changed it myself. You can do a search on it on how to do it yourself. The synthetics we have in our cars are very good. I read recently in a article about the new 7, that in certain driving conditions, a car would not need a oil change for 22,000 miles.

don't think you need to change the oil so early... you can probably wait till about 3000 miles at least before you do it yourself... much cheaper anyways...

Picked up my 2001 M5 on October 17th, 2000................
17 months later and now showing 5100 miles on the odometer, I have not changed the oil at all and have added just 1 quart during this time.......... Car runs great, and oil looks like new !
Like wongster said, personal choice, and probably no wrong choice. I got my oil and filter changed at 1200 miles. I've got 8000 miles on the engine now and am debating on getiing them changed again but not resetting the lights. Probably overkill but peace of mind is worth something...........

Man!! you guys who are "oil changing" happy freaks needs to read the March issue of Roundel.
Everything you wanted to know about synthetic oil.
Read Top of Page 80, the last Column.
"Okay, I am a really paranoid guy and a true BMW fanatic and I WANT to change my oil at 3,000 miles. Is there anything wrong w/ that? After all, you'd sell alot more lubricants that rate. But Granquist tells me it's nothing but a waste of money. "Redline actually works better after being left in the car for a while," he says. "The additives build up protection over time through the reaction of combustion by products......"
Like I said all alone... anyone who changes sythetic oil every 3,000 miles has got way too much money in their pocket!!
Also, stay away from the BMW sythetic/Castrol Crap!! I am only using "true" sythetics in my Blue Lightning!!
