Sould I wait? 2004?

I got my name down for an M5 May production for delivery in June. I just got word of an all new next generation M5 in 2004! V-10! 450hp! Should I continue to drive my Si for another 2 years for the new model? Does anyone know if there are any changes for the 2003 model? If anyone knows of any site for the new generation M5 please post. Thanks

Right now, V10, 550 hp, etc., are all rumours. There's no guarantee that the next generation M5 will be available in 2004 or even with those features you listed. It's more of a wait and see game right now.

Many people here also believe that with the styling direction BMW seems to be taking, it's questionable whether or not the next generation M5 will be desirable styling-wise. We'll see though.

Going from a Si to a M5 is a huge jump.. Either way, you will NOT be disappointed, the M5 is a heckuva car!

Gaspasser, I was in your "dilema" approximately 6 months ago and I just opted to get a 2002 M5 for all the reasons atomic80 posted.

I think the e39 M5 (the current one) is beautiful and a perfect balance of power and functionality. Just go for this one.... you may wait unitl a 2005 for the next m5, you may get it in 2004, whatever. It may be ugly as hell, have problems initially, etc. Just my two cents.

Best of luck!

One other thing I have to point out. I was in your position last year...I ordered my car in April with a late May production date. My car was shipped sometime in early June and didn't make it to port until July and finally to my dealership in mid-July. I didn't get to pick up my M5 until late July because I was out of town until then. Anyways, I would imagine that you're realistically looking at an early-mid July delivery date although that might change.

Anyone looking to get an M5 should do it now.

1. You will have at least 2 more years of driving fun.
2. There is no telling when the next M5 is really going to be made. Or if it will even be made. It seems impossible, but stranger things have happened.
3. There is no telling what it will look like.
4. There is no telling how long a wait list may be.
5. There is no telling how much over list they may be going for.

Spoke to some BMW friends at the Geneva show. Next M5 is definitely V10, available 2004-5. It will have the capacity to be increased during its lifetime. M6 may be out before though!

Gaspasser,

Current word on the street is that there will be production of the current body style M5 this fall through possibly next spring. I have not heard of any definitive date for the next M5, but as many pointed out, it seems that it will be a much different car both aesthetically as well as mechanically (bigger engine, bigger cab).

Several people have related to me that there are no more changes planned for the car--either midyear 2002 or in 2003.

Be sure to check around when pricing. Many dealers in LA are now offering cars at MSRP and I understand that Nick Alexander BMW (downtown LA) is taking between $500-1000 off sticker for current in stock cars.

Good Luck,

LC

Life is too short to take a chance...

Gaspasser,

Life is really so, so short...two, three years might not sound like
much, but think of all the fun you would be missing if you didn't
make the jump right now.

As some of the other posters also write, you won't really be
able to tell when/if you'll get your hands on a next generation
M5.

Go for it now and enjoy as much as you can!

Best regards,

Fedde

It might have more power, but I have a bad feeling about the design
