Looking forward to receiving and installing Powerchip which I ordered today. Ryan of Powerchips mentioned there is considerably more power available in the M5 engine, but it depends upon the quality of gas. We only have 93 octane in Texas.
Is this something that we can install ourselves? Can you fill us in on what is involved? It sounds like we would be physically changing something as opposed to uploading software.

did you just end up calling them like apples said or did you contact them thru email? i still can't register correctly on the site for some reason... let us know what your impressions are after you install it...thanks
another quick question, what exactly are they sending you? a disc?
I could not register on the U.S. site and there is, apparently, a good reason for that. They do not, as yet, have a U.S. affiliate. I was able to register on the Australian site. The following day, I received a phone call from Ryan and additional info from Lance.
The process is that they send a cable that connects to a laptop, along with a program, color pictures, etc. The cable is used for installing the program through the service port. I should be able to handle it, but I will post the results as soon as I know.
They indicated the cable, software, etc. usually arrives in 3 days. If so, I know what I will be doing Saturday morning. The cable has to be returned to them.
This would have been an excellent product for a group purchase.
atomic80,
I have done the Powerchip by myself. All needed is
1. a laptop with serial and parallel port.
2. Interface cables from laptop to car's OBD port.
3. Chip to store original ECU.
4. CD that contains the Program to do the ECU programming.
Item numbers 2,3,4 are supplied by Powerchip. They charge $200 US$ for item 2, but this item we can return it after we're finished programming. I opted to keep it and pay $200 so in the future if I ever need to return to original ECU I can do it instantly.
The process is very simple. After connecting all the cables and installing the Program to the computer, the original ECU is extracted from our M5. Then, this original ECU file is sent to Powerchip australia via email. They will then modify this file, essentially modify the ECU. This process takes 3-6 hours. They send the modified ECU back to us via email. And at last upload the modified ECU to the M5, that's it. Simple and clean, takes less than 30 minutes. 20hp, speed limiter off, 200 more rpm, only $800.
So, if you want to install Powerchip ECU, I can let u use my interface cables.
I would be very interested as well guys. I have a local shop here who I could have them do the downloads.
I had the Dinan software and right now it is off. I want more power and their chip doesn't provide any more HP. Does this one really add up to 18 extra. Would love more feedback.
Thanks guys and would love to find out how I could get this done asap on my car.
Could you really feel no hp increase with the Dinan software? Was there any downside on the Dinan? I think that the Powerchip gets more than 18, but it is dependent upon the octane rating of the gas. I think that with 93 octance (you probably only have 91 in California), the hp increase is 25+ hp increase.
The dinan sofware didn't give any HP increase. It did however increase the revs by 300 and removed the speed limiter. The throttle response is a little bit better as well.
So I am looking for more HP. The issue to think about is will the Powerchip software affect the Dinan headers and cams if I get them from Dinan?
