After my car has been running

So I have noticed that when I first start the car for the day , starts right up and idles great but , after I have driven it and it gets up to temperature if I shut it off and then try to start it it can take awhile....I am guessing I need to put a check valve in the fuel line to keep the fuel up on top of the system but , anyone else got any ideas? It only happens when it is up to temperature and when it finally starts the car runs fine...

Before my M5, I had a 540i (great car). I had it for about 5 years. When I first bought it there was just under 50k on the clock. It acted strange as it would just die or act funny when at temp. After a lot of time effort and energy, I learned that the S62 and the M62 are very sensitive with the MAF. I changed it out and the car became a dream. My money would say that your problem is exactly the same and this should be step number one. How many miles are on the car and was this ever changed? Best of Luck to you.

That is a possibility , I will clean the MAF. The engine barely has 1000 miles on it. It is kind of a custom 540i. Good thought though , I will clean it tomorrow, thanks... David C

It sounds like a fuel pressure regulator ... very uncommon failure, but exactly the symptoms you describe. It may be part of the fuel filter canister, I'm don't remember for sure (check out RealOEM) ... it happened on another BMW I owned.

Having all the crap I do for a fuel system that is kind of the thought I had.I am going to add a check valve on the in line of the system before the Y-connector. Then I am going to pull the fuel rail and do a pressure test on it as I can always smell fuel when I first get to the garage but , never can find any fuel residue.( I put a fresh piece of cardboard under the car all along the fuel lines ) Since I have the Walbro GSS342 HF fuel pump and Aereomotive fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator I will have to track the problem by process of elimination. Thanks....

David - I'm watching this one closely, as I've had a similar phenomenon. She always fires right up cold, and usually fires right up warm, but occasionally, she takes a long while to start warm. If/when I get her going during an episode, she doesn't want to keep going. The A/F is rich during this time. There definitely is something intermittently off with the fuel delivery. If I leave her sitting a while, she'll fire right up again and runs normally I've been thinking fuel pressure regulator also.... (I have fresh MAFs, and this tendency preceded a recent MAF swap.)

Dave
