help me id this part!!!! I think it is an oil level sensor...

Guys, I'm new to the E39 M5 world. More experienced with E46s.
Anyhow, can someone confirm whether the part on the picture (leaky oil sensor me thinks) is the same as #9 on the real oem diagram below?

Actually, looking at it, it doesn't look like the part on the diagram. I think I need to replace the o-ring for whatever that part is...
Any ideas?

thanks!

This is one of the oil solenoide valves

PITA to remove,you need O-ring 2,3,4
Best way is to hold it with locking pliers and pull it out

Cheers,

Raikku

Edit, looking at the rest of your engine, are you sure it is the source of your oil loss?

that is one of many leaks I have found. I just recently bought the car from a member here.
The car has a leak from the diff axle seals, also, there were multiple areas where the power steering was leaking, most of that mess you see is power steering fluid.

Ah,and about the ps oil leak and differential, that's normal on these cars...

Steering hose and diff side seals are not uncommon. The solenoid on the other hand -- I have not read about before.

It's not the oil level sensor you are looking at. It's the solenoid for oil scavenging during high cornering loads.
I've seen them leak. Not super common.

Awesome help guys! Thank you much!
I'm thinking I need to replace the entire unit since oil appears to be leaking around the plug area and the plate with the 2 little bolts.

Yes, I was aware of that. I looked under the car for the first time yesterday and finding little dots of oil, and PS fluid on my garage.
By the way, I changed my tranny oil yesterday and the oil that came out was completely burnt. No wonder why shifting was not pleasant.

The part about the oil solenoides I wrote in another DIY thread:

Now remove the oil solenoides on both sides if the upper pan(they go in the oilpump).Twist and pull them out with adjustable pliers, they are hard to get out and when they pop out,a load of oil also comes out!
