Should I replace my MAFs?

I did the MAF test and got 140 L/H. However, my car does have 96k miles on it. There is nothing wrong with the car. It doesn't even burn oil. (It will probably start to now that I've said it doesn't). The MAFs are original, so should I change them? If I did, I would probably replace the CPSs, oil seperators, spark plugs, and O2 sensors together.

if i'm remembering correctly, 140 is an optimum reading.

there's preventative maintenance, and then there's paranoid maintenance...i'd save your $350 for something else you'll inevitably need.

Strong M5 ! 140 L/Hr indicates all systems and mafs are good: 120 L/Hr means that some systems are bad and mafs are good OR bad mafs and systems are bad OR bad mafs... I would leave MAFS alone for the moment. Were they corrected figures at WOT, 3rd gear at redline ?

Maybe have a look at the suspension/steering components instead : thrust arm bushes, control arms, tie rods, sway bar bushes, rear ball joints, rear wishbones etc etc

1st gear WOT at 7000rpms. Adjusted, I think I'm at 138-139 L/H. Suspension is actually in pretty good shape, but I'm going to replace it with a coilover system sometime next spring/summer.

I would strongly recommend 3rd gear WOT and hit the rev limiter....check your mirrors for police before you try this though !! Ask me how I know !

1st gear is going to, I suspect, a wildly erratic figure.

Please do tell how you know! With 1st gear I looked in the 6000-6500 range and it was around 125L/H. I looked again right before the throttle cut off and I saw 140. I think I'm going to try with 2nd gear today. The problem with 3rd gear WOT is that the highway I drive on regularly always has police.

Good advice, I believe that only 2nd or 3rd gear numbers are considered a valid indication of MAF performance, based on the links in the FAQ section.

This thread interested me because I believe I'm on original MAF's with 120k miles and I just pulled 140L/H corrected in 3rd gear at limiter last week.

Good to know the Beast is Strong!!

good luck OP!

Just got home. Got 142L/H unadjusted in 2nd gear at WOT which is right around 140 adjusted.

Your MAFs are fine. Don't touch them.

If your car pulls evenly from 2000 to 7000 RPM and you see 140 L/Hr then there is no reason to replace the MAFs. Of course, they may suddenly go bad without any warning and in some cases the car will then run very poorly. Should that happen you can simply disconnect them and drive without MAFs until you get the new ones. By the way, that is another way to verify if you have MAF problems. If the car drives better without them, they are shut! You don't even need to try that!
