It all started when the dealership changed my black cluster with the new one because of burned pixels. Right away, I didn't like it. The grey of the face and the rings did not suit me at all. But alas! I got some chrome rings off ebay and the problem got better.
I knew that something else would have to be done. But, it was fine for the time being, so it was put away.
A few months ago, I got this watch:
Upon seeing the stainless steel bezel, I immediately recognized what I had to do with the gauges! And so I designed as rings for the cluster them and got to work. Let me tell you...these are seriously labor intensive. It took us easily 3 hours for all 4 rings. The pictures that I'm posting is the first attempt (small size adjustment is necessary). Now, the regular chrome knobs are plastic, so they pass through the gauge openings with ease. However, aluminum does not! Especially when it's 3/8 thick! So I had to cut the lower part of the bezel and push them through (taped so that they don't scratch the acrylic) the opening from which you see the "pixels." In the coming weeks, I'll be remaking these in the correct size (hopefully).
Unfortunately, these are so labor intensive to do by hand that it would make for a ridiculous price (think over $200 for a set). The best would be to have a shop make these in a CNC machine out of stainless steel, but they are gonna be pretty pricey considering the low volume (not to mention the number of people willing to crack open their clusters). So, here's the result:
