SES light-Camshaft Position Sensor Issues

So, After countless hours searching through the board, I still am a bit confused with my readings. At first, I took my vehicle to Schucks Auto to have them check the fault codes. It read, "Camshaft Position Sensor Bank B." I then bought a Peake reader and through (table 1b) it faulted=OA: exhaust camshaft pos. sensor, along with a few missfiring at startup faults. Which side is that? I'm assuming the left side (passenger) although that would be different then what the Shucks Auto reader suggested.

I understand left side exhaust sensor is somewhat DIY-20-45 minutes. Any estimated costs to replace drivers side should I need to go that route?

Any help would be appreciated. I'm not having a very nice start to my new beast. 2 weeks in-scratches from hit n run, 150.00 peake reader, and now this...

For LHD vehicles

Passenger side = Cylinders 1-4

Drivers side = Cylinders 5-8

IIRC the peak doesnt show which bank it shows the cylinder bank. I believe bank 1 is passenger side while bank 2 is drivers side. Im not 100% sure on that though.

I would replace both exhaust CPS's to be on the safe side. They can be had for about $100 each off Tischer BMW. (www.getbmwparts.com).

It is very simple, for the drivers side it is easiest to go from underneath to avoid removing anything un needed. For the passenger side it is easiest to go from the top. I recommend some sort of ratcheting driver like this. Cant find a pic ill post it up. You will need the appropriate hex bit. IF you buy the hex bit only a 1/4" wrench will fit over the bit perfectly and allow you to break it loose easier.

Its quite simple, CPS's are very common, they're pretty much a maintenance item on these cars it seems. IF you look in the FAQ there is a how to for doing the CPS!

0A on a Peake Code reader for our M5s is Exhaust CPS Cyl 1-4 (Bank 1). It says which bank it is in my book !

Bank 1 is always the left hand bank when you are standing in front of your car looking at your engine with your knees touching the front bumper.

I can do Exhaust CPS swap on Bank 1 in 25 mins and I am not a mechanic, going from above.

As Jtm says use a ratcheted style tool !

Cheers and good luck !

There is always some confusion about "right" and "left" because it depends whether you are in the car, or facing the car as you note above.

On the racetrack, sides are always in reference to the driver, so bank 1 would always be "drivers right" and bank 2 "drivers left". Might make it easier to discuss.

Just something to think about, so we can spend more time deciding which oil is best!
Regards,
Jerry
