I went to look at it and I told them that I would think about it. The salesman was kind of a jerk, and I knew he was lying about things. He told me that "We only get our cars locally" but I already pulled a carfax and saw that it came from NC. Then he said that to update the Navigation, I could take it to the BMW dealership and they would "flash the memory" for $20. (Yea right. I cant even get a jug of coolant for $20!).
So they posted it on ebay. I bid $15,000 and hit the reserve and no one else bid. During the time of the auction, I went to go drive it several times, but it was always unavailable as the salesman was always joy riding in it (who can blame him?). I finally got to drive it and I notice the CEL. I took it straight to Autozone (with him in the car) and got them to scan it. It pulled the P0491 code (Emissions Air Pump). When we got back, he was ready to write up the sales order and I told him to forget it. He said that I was OBLIGATED to buy it because of the terms of eBay. I told him that they are obligated under the terms of eBay to represent the car truthfully and that the CEL should have been either noted, or fixed. Then I left.
The manager called the next day and offered to take $500 off the price. I told him to take the car to the Dealer and have it fixed and I will purchase the car so long as they give me the receipt to prove it. I went to the dealer and asked for a quote to replace the entire Air pump system. They gave me a quote for around $2200. I took the quote to the dealer and told them to give me $2200 off the price and I will buy it. They said they would give me half. I finally settled on them giving me 75% off ($1650). After tax & title, it worked out just shy of $15k.
good job on the negotiation but you should focus on not paying that tax & title BS next time, I've never paid that in my life. I always wait until I'm in the little office with the financing/paperwork guy and then I tell him I negotiated for $xxxx.xx including T&T (or T, T, and freight for new cars). Of course that's a lie but I always threaten to walk and I've never had to pay it. I once threatened to walk over $7/month gap insurance on a lease. Works every time!
Very interesting color on that car, I don't know where BMW gets off calling that blue, that's pretty much dark-graphite or black
Looks good though, and welcome to the board!

Oh, I am sure you paid it! No matter what, the governments will get theirs.
That's what I mean about OTD (Out the door). When I deal with cars, I always deal on the final amount and let the dealer to the math. So if I say 15K OTD! That translates to 14K and some change + the tax, title, etc.
Well. if it is a secondary air flow issue (ie carbon build up)and not a generic 'air pump' the full blown cost to fix is astronomical.
But we just recommend a flash of the software to avoid that fault. (ie DME ignores the fault) Make sure you know exactly what is wrong before deciding to spend money to fix.
In many states a smog is required to sell the car... and you can't pass smog with a CEL. Not yours I am guessing

I am getting a P0491 as an error code. Thats all I know right now. When the car starts cold (another reason I wanted to surprise them) the Air Pump sounds like someone rattling a bucket of bolts from inside the car. I am hoping I just need a new air pump and I will be done with the issue.

No smog required to buy or sell here. There is smog tests in chicago and st. louis area however. You get a letter in the mail and you have to go to a state run facility. If you dont go, or if you go and have a problem, you cannot renew your tags.
