Bad sensor or possibly an air bubble trapped under the sensor

Oil temperature gauge climbs to 100 degrees C gradually.
Which implies that the oil is actually getting hot

Suddenly (longer trip than I'm used to) we lose heating.
Which means either your heating core is gone, or something is preventing it from getting hot water. Usually an air bubble.

This is weird.

Or maybe it's just BEASTLY.
I see three different issues, all related to the coolant system and all with a possible root cause of an air bubble. If I were you I'd bleed my system ASAP...

I trust your expertise Doug.

Thanks for your view.

Why would these symptoms arise in such a random way?

I can go months without a gauge going off-scale and then I get three incidents within an hour. Then I get a new symptom that doesn't persist. I suspect it is, like the others, lurking.

All depends on where the air bubble(s) is in the system. Modeling the turbulence of even a simple system like our cooling is complicated, but basically it may be that the bubble gets trapped somewhere for long periods and then dislodges when something silly happens. What and where is beyond me...
