Location & color of fuel pump relay

So my beast died and code is for fuel pump relay.
I've searched the threads and seen conflicting information (black color vs. green & near the glove box vs. trunk location) & hope to get it straight because the dealer can't tell me what it looks like or where it is.
I believe the relay is in the trunk on the right side, directly adjacent to the fuses and is light or dark green. There are two of these light green relays, one towards the front (next to the black relay) and one in the next relay slot to the rear..... there's one more relay and it's dark green (the rear-most relay).
Thanks in advance....E

So the dealer said it's behind the glove box...a 9 pin relay. Took it apart & didn't find it. Replaced the two light green relays in the trunk...no change. Then there's also a light green one behind the glove box & tried the two old ones from the trunk there...no change. I'll look at more of the existing relay part numbers tomorrow. Any suggestions till then are appreciated.

...

I couldn't find much information on the relays either. A few members have posted about being able to swap a rear window heater relay with the fuel pump relay to test. Not sure of this.

Also, since you have a 2002, not sure of anything on your car.

But, for mine, there were two fuel pump relays. A black one in the truck next to the fuses. Part number 61357892976.

A green one in the ECU box in the engine. Part number 61368373700. But, I am confused, as this one seems to be a horn relay on further testing.

Not much help. At the least, here's a bump so someone who has a definite answer will see thread and help you!!

Good luck.

Just fixed mine a week ago. Not sure what the one in the ECU box does, but I replaced it anyway. I also replaced the 2 light green in the trunk. One is for the DSP and one is for the fuel pump. I believe the one nearest the dark green is the fuel pump relay. If you pull the one next to the black, then the DSP should be grayed out on the NAV screen and no sound to your radio. Check this with your car as I may have these reversed. I have a 2000.

Also, the black unit is also related to the fuel system, called the EKP module.

After I replaced the relays, I didn't have a starting problem anymore.

Good luck.

Thanks a lot for the tips guys....Avusblue wrote a little while back...
"So I pulled the green relay closest to the tailight and the moto still runs. Huh?
I pulled the middle green relay and the dsp is disabled."
So, apparently the light green relay directly adjacent to the black (EKP Module) module has something to do with fuel....but it didn't help me when replaced. EKP module is next on the chopping block. I'll post back with results.

Maybe a good idea to replace the other light green relay in the ecu box. I think that's the one behind the glove box.
I also remember that even though the motor still ran with the relay pulled, it took a while to restart. My guess is the there was still fuel in the line. If I left it out long enough, it would have stalled as it did on the road.

Open the trim panel to expose the battery. At this time look above the battery ,there is a small fuse block . It is whiite plastic.Approx the same placement as the NAV drive but other side ofthe car.

Towards the front of the fues/ relay block is the Large BLACK relay.

OK...I'll go check to see what you're talking about. Earlier....I ordered the tall black one that's currently pulled out...left of the light green one's in this pic. And looks like the other pic

Opened up my trunk, lifted the flat panel right inside the trunk....there's the battery...nothing else around. In my car...I think what's being referred to is to the front of the passenger tail light, behind the vertical panel.

I replaced both the light green ones behind the trunk panel....and then the black EKP module one on the left. After it didn't start I thought one of the light green ones might have been bad from the factory....so I pulled each one...one at a time....to see which one would make the nav screen go gray...in hopes of determining if one of them was bad....but neither grayed out the nav screen....I could still see text. I didn't see if the radio put out sound....try that tomorrow & report back.
Thanks!

So I did the DSP check....actually I don't know where to check the DSP or what it is....so I did the radio check...I know where that is. Both light green relays function....so I'm guessing the ones I took out are still good. Now I guess I'll need to check the voltage across the fuel pump.

From what I gather...it's under the passenger side of the rear seat. I'll check it like something in this thread: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39-m5-e52-z8-discussion/133240-diagnosing-fuel-pump.html

I haven't taken out a rear seat, but here's what I found in another rear seat post:
The bench seat just pulls out, grab at front corner of seat cushion and pull up hard. Should pop up, then slide forward a bit and pull out. When ready to put it back you just line it up with the seat belt connectors and put in back in place, making sure to hear a snap on each side, knowing that it's secure.
Cheers,

Brown & Red at the fuel pump are at ~12v when key turned...so I ordered a new fuel pump ($351).
Here's the weird part:
Test with New EKP Module (key out, doors closed for over a minute): 0.92v
Test with Old EKP Module (key out, doors closed for over a minute): 0.10v and it reached ~12v (still good module...apparently pump all along?)
Insight into the above appreciated. I'll post back if the new pump doesn't solve the problem.
Cheers,

Bump!

I have some questions about the different relays that haven't really found an answer for (i have read most fuel relay threads here) so im hoping someone could help me now.

My car is running fine but it has some starting issues when it has been standing for a few hours after the fuel pump was replaced. When i first turn the key on to ignition the engine will crank around but NO ignition, if i just turn the key off and on again a 2nd time it will start right up! I just did a fuel pump/filter replacement could there be some air in the system or something? I did not have this issue before swapping pump & filter.

Anyway i thought it would be nice to have a fresh relay as well (in case the first ignition fail is a relay related fault), said and done bought a Black one OEM from BMW dealer, when i looked at my current one its Green! Anyway i thought ill try the Black one, so i removed the green one only to find that it had 5-pins and the new Black one has 9-pins!

My car will NOT start with the black one in place but it starts with the green! Could this be because all my other relays are Green and there is some kind of mismatch? (the one in the front of the car is green)

So, whats really the difference between the 2 "OEM" Fuel relays? They both seem to be working sometimes?

The green one: BMW Fuel Pump Relay (5 Pin) - Meistersatz 61368373700 | FCP Euro
OEM number: 61368373700

The black one: BMW Fuel Pump Relay (Z3 M5 M3) - Genuine BMW 61357892976 | FCP Euro
OEM number: 61357892976

My car is a 1999 M5 so on most US sites it wont show as an alternative in the lists.

Check your fuses below those relays there.. I forget which one it is, think it’s one of the cream ones to the left, 12amp. Remove them one at a time Check very carefully, I had one go recently, it looked ok but turned out to be bad, after I replaced the pump and still no start!! Checked fuse again and it had slight blackening on the side. Was the fuse all along. Pull up back seat bottom, stick your ear to the pump cover where wires go in, have someone turn key to on, not start, and you should hear the pump start whirring, if it doesn’t, it’s not working for some reason, fuse, relay, or dead pump.good luck and let’s know how you go.
