I bought a similar set from these guys (Motorsports Downunder) for my 93 540i earlier this year.
I actually fitted them myself, and have never done this sort of thing before. I just went out and bought a trolley jack and stands and
gave it a go. Once you know how to remove the sway bar and subframe (literally its 3 bolt either side of the car and takes like 10 minutes)
it wasnt all that hard to do. Just frustrating how little room there is either side of the engine in the 540 (same thing with e39 i believe).
Ive been very happy with them. Theres a noticable increase in power right across the rev range. I can definitely notice a big difference in seat of the pants power. Id get the car dyno'd but i didnt get it dyno'd before i had the headers, so it might be hard to tell how much hp they gave.
I know a few people that have also bought from them, and have been very happy with the quality of the product and fitment.

I'm actually thinking of doing a manual transmission swap in my 540. There was a rare model called the 540ile whichcameto Australia instead of the e34 M5. It was basically a 540i fitted with a 6 speed manual from the e34 M5, recaro m5 interior, lsd diff, etc.
I wonder ifany other Getrag gearboxes would be a decent swap, as i can imagine a genuine M5 one would be worth a pretty penny.
