Be really-extra-super-careful when using a "charger" as a power source when programming. VERY bad things can happen if there is a surge on the line or if the charger burps (happens often). Battery chargers don't have tightly regulated power supplies and can generate fairly strong voltage variations.
Programma and Midtronics both make power supplies designed for programming. I've used the Midtronics 55A unit on an E39 with few issues. On an E60 or E90 it runs out of steam real fast. I recently purchased Snap-On's new EEBC500 Charger/Power supply which appears to have more than enough available juice for my E60.
