Rear axle bearing replaced (driver's side) UGH! *PICS*

I learned many things on this job...

#1 Don't try to do a job this tough after working a 12 hour 3rd shift night. I woke up at 3pm on Sunday, worked 7pm Sunday night to 730 Monday morning and worked on the car from 8am till 630pm. That should explain my frustration..... Sorry to those who were left in the wake of timmay77's rant....

#2 The correct tools make all the world in the difference. Some of us don't have the luxuary of having a buddy who works at a dealership to loan us all the special tools *cough*Raza*cough*.....

#3 This job isn't that bad if you have the CORRECT TOOLS, sleep (LOL), and patience (which I lack). I will do the other side myself, just not now.....

OK, here we go.....

It seems there are MANY ways to do this job. I read at least 4 diffferent vesions.

Before jacking up the car, remove center cap from the wheel and carefully use a screw driver to un-pin the axlw nut and loosen it up. You will need a breaker bar and another cheater bar probably. Jack up car SAFELY, correctly block it or use jack stands, and remove tire. (I am not liable if you drop the car on yourself as always) Take off brake pads and brake carrier. Remove rotor, yeah right, easier said than done. I would HIGHLY suggest to anyone about to do this, if you think you may need rear brakes, do then at this time. It would make this part of the job WAY easier, no need in worrying about saving the rotor. I had to be VERY CAREFUL while removing it. I finally used a soft rubber mallet and beat the living hell out of it to get it off. PB Blaster helped a bit too. As you can see there are 2 locking bolts, not 1 as BMW says. Now for the fun part. Getting the hub off of the axle. Take your axle nut the rest of the way off and clamp on a 3 prong gear puller. Some people used a slide hammer, no fricken way that would have worked for me. I used my handy dandy electric impact, and about 20 minutes later, POP!!!, it came off, inner bearing race and all. Scary moment. I personally did not have to remove the axle. I removed the entire spindle/carrier/axle housing, whatever it is called. I removed the top 2 links and the sway bar first. Then the ebrake cable, ebrake shoes, and the sensor on the side. (Not sure what it is, brake wear sensor?) I then took of the bottom long bolt to the lower arm and removed the whole thing. I took it to work and pressed off the bearing race from them hub and pressed on the new bearing. Back at the house I re-assembled the brakes on the carrier, got it lined back up, and bolted on my bearing+hub. All was going well UNTIL the axle would not slide all the way through the hub. (SEE PICS BELOW) I had to go BACK to work and weld up a special tool. This problem in itself made the job about 4 hours longer than itt needed to be. I fought with it for 3 hours before getting pissed and just making the tool. After that, I was driving it within an hour. I have an alignment set up for today, so the car should ride great tonight....

Now for tthe pics....

Old axle bolt after un pinning it.

I later put a little stool under this instead of hanging it by the zip tie. It was in my way like this.

This is the backside of the carrier. The reverse torx are the bearing bolts.

As you can see. I only needed about 1/2" more to get the nut on to pull it through. I could put the nut on backwards, but then had nothing to turn it with.

My custom made axle puller.

New axle bolt before pinning it down.

THE TOOL

The aftermath
