"Free Maintenance", indeed. I've had plenty of BMW service managers that stuck to the policy line of once a year. On the other hand, if you're willing to pay for it out of your pocket, or if you don't have "Free Maintenance", then they highly recommend 3/3,000.

Part of the reason for all the Oil threads/posts is that the 'manufacturer recommendation' for the E39 M5 is unclear/confused/contradictory!

And these books of oil threads are not confusing. OK!

Did I say that they were not? Of course they are confusing, because no one knows 100% what the situation is, and they probably never will.

Yep. I agree with you, which is why I follow OEM recommendations. And I sleep really good at night by using TWS and doing the oil change myself.

The argument against TWS is that it's too thick, particularly when cold, for general road use. This causes extra drag on the bearings which leads to early failure, especially rod bearings.

The argument for TWS is that it maintains viscosity at high temperatures and has special additives specifically for the S62.

Sleep well!!

TWS pumps like a 10 weight when cold. I've never seen anyone say TWS was too thick for road use on the S62. The argument against TWS is that the clearances on the new high tension rings was too tight for the thicker oil.

PS BMW 5w30 in europe castrol SLX.....Here in the US, that's not the case. We get a POS high detergency 5w30 that sludges to high hell at 22,500mi intervals (what the SII's are programmed to in the US for cars that are on the free maint program). I used 5w30 in my X5 at 7500mi intervals and German Castrol 0w30 at the other two 7500mi intervals. Basically I was doing two changes in between and getting the 3rd oil change for free from BMW. Cheap insurance IMO

mm, wouldn't that mean the oil is to thick?
