In my experience, by 7500 miles TWS10w60 is sheared down to a 'heavy 40 weight'... there are probably UOAs posted on this board that will show it.

The thicker the oil, the FASTER it will shear down. BWM LL5w30 is so thin that it doesnt have much shearing, in terms of where it starts (and hence can go stupid long intervals) TWS will drop fast in the S62.

7500, in my experience, seems to be the magic # for TWS

where is the relevant test at operating temperature?

I am disappointed that you didnt understand the question after the lengthy thread we have just been through.

You should figure out how to use the "Quote" button.

You can then ask and respond to specifc posts. (Instead of craftiing a reply out of the blue which you seem to do...)

Send RichardP a PM and ask him why his test doesn't have 100C viscosity if you need to know...

All I know is I've owned my M5 for 2 years + and I don't drive it in the winter (cold temps). I change my oil each year in the spring and drive very little (75K on my '00 M5). I use the TWS @ 12/litre, and replace my filter....yes my oil change each year costs me ~115.00 US dollars. I complained during my most recent change this season and my customer rep told me to hit the tripometer and get back to him when it runs low b/c there are hoses on the intake that can suck oil back into the plenum (pretty basic concept of EGR). I checked my oil the other day after 550 miles of around town/occasional short distance hard driving. The oil was reaching the low point at 550 miles of daily driving....and yes it's all coming out of my tailpipes as I recently upgraded to the MagnaFlows and my shiny tips are constantly filthy after a week of driving around... I'm wiping them down to make them look nice. At this point my local stealer agrees that $12/litre is expensive and all they're saying is they can start to chart/log/document the consumption which I'm sure won't be free (I can (and have) been doing that myself). Bottom line is with 75-76K on her this may be a good time to unload it since it doesn't seem the problem will go away and I'm getting sick of topping off oil 75-100 days after I change the oil. It's a awesome beast but it does get old. Maybe I'm just getting frustrated but it gets old running to the stealer for oil every couple mos....but she is a great ride! Amazing machine!

How many miles on yours? How often you change the oil?

I change the oil every 6000 Miles

I usually get about get between 600 and 1000 miles per litre.

I never let it go below half way on the dipstick !

Oil consumption CAN vary during the course of a car's life AND between different cars with the same piston ring design AND also between old and new piston ring design cars AND with differing driving styles.

I bought my one on 94K Miles and now on 117K Miles and its been pretty constant throughout, depending on driving style.

March '00 is the supposed implementation of the new ring design.

Can you do me a favour and open both your air filter housings and tell me if there is any evidence of oil in there please ?

No Oil Usage

I've had my 2000 M5 for three months now and have put 4,000 miles (mostly highway) on it. It has 58,000 miles on the odometer. I checked the oil yesterday and there has been minimal activity on the dipstick. I'll take the car in for the Insp II/60,000 service in early December, and I'd bet the oil level will stay the same over the next 1,000-2,000 miles. So far, the oil on the dipstick has dropped maybe 1/4 inch and I have not had to add a drop of oil. My 1995 M3 has over 125,000 miles on it, and that I-6 is revved up more than the V8, all the time, and it does not use/lose one drop of oil between regular 3,000 oil changes either. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!
