There wasn't enough debate about oils before, so what do we do? We sticky an oil debate on the front page. Classic - this will certainly help the exchange of facts. Oh wait, there hasn't been a single one in here yet.
Don't look at me.... ?! I just wanted to get BMW's take on the whole thing, which I got, and posted. Next thing I know it's a sticky. It does move away from all the conjecture in one sense, as it is from the guys who designed the thing, and they ought to have a pretty good idea what to lubricate it with, but then it kind of devolved into a normal oil thread as they all do, so I just went with the flow. I figured the suntan thing would finish it, but hey - it's an oil thread - they have no end! (you have to admit though, it is a damned fine picture!)
Still not 100% sure on the oil thing myself to be honest, but I'm sticking with Edge as long as the guys who designed the engine recommend it. After my expreience with Mobil 1 when I first bought my M5, and the drastic reduction in consumption that Edge bought me, I'm very happy with this conclusion, so until someone gives me something more concrete, I'm sticking with the sticky.... (I think).
100% - this is good information, and I think we all appreciate your efforts in getting as much information as you were able to get.
To me, there is still 1 critical piece of information that I would like to know (in case your folks are still willing to answer questions ): At what temperature did they assume the engine would operate? 100C? 120C? There must be an operating temp assumption to go with the oil viscosity recommendation, so if you think they'll help you then I know I, at least, would appreciate it!

d-
motly i have seen 92deg suggested as a good working temp for an engine under typical operating conditions.
obviously if you do any track work that will go up
The question is not what is typical - the question is "What was the S62 specifically designed for". There was an assumption at the time of design. Without knowing that, everything else is guessing.
Gentlemen, we've started back down the slippery slope towards thread failure...lets not ruin this
it was designed as a large engine for a luxury barge, happy being driven on the Autobahn all day, or in the city stuck in traffic, those are typical conditions you will find this car in.
typical is not the Nürburgring, Hockenheimring, a Hill Climb or DTM race, or indeed any other form of motorsport.
