ESS Supercharger

Got a question. I should be receiving my kit next week, however I want to install an intercooller. Does anyone know the dimensions on the intercooller that comes with CA Automotive kit?? Or if anyone knows where to buy one that will fit on the buttom of the front bumper.

Thanks

Chris K.

RMS sells a reasonably expensive in-plenum air-to-water intercooler that comes with new shorty air horns, an aluminum plenum and plenum cover, and aluminum TB-to-plenum plates, as well as a water pump and a heat exchanger that fits neatly in the lower grill area. That is the setup I am using. You can see pictures of it in all of the Discovery Automotive E39 SC builds on their website. According to AJ of ESS, they have used an FMIC air-to-air setup with the ESS VT550 kit by redirecting the intake off the SC downward. Apparently, there is sufficient room to do so. PM Roy at CA Automotive for the dimensions on the CA kit IC. They may sell it separately, I don't know.

I know this is off topic. But why are so many E39 M5 owners named chris? I can think of 3 off the top of my head. And now the OP is Chris K, im also a Chris K lol.

Keep in mind the design of the FMIC and ducting is crucial to maintain power. You may end up with way less than 550HP if this is not done properly.

I would recommend staying with the off the shelf VT550 kit if your goal is ~550-580HP. The heat developed from such low boost pressures is minimal and you loose more efficiency by forcing the air through a FMIC setup.

Yes that's true that a low-boost setup doesn't generally require a FMIC, but similar to a turbo setup where the boost pressure sensor can be relocated to downstream of/after the FMIC to compensate for pressure drop through the intercooler, can't you just run a 1-2 psi larger pulley to compensate for the FMIC? I mean since there is probably power to spare from the supercharger unit itself it couldn't hurt right? I've never supercharged a car before so if that's a dumb idea then nevermind

Yes, but it will cost engine power to drive the SC faster to compensate for pressure loss. The equation typically does not work in your favor on a low boost setup (less than 7PSI) in normal temperature conditions (->90F)

Oh I think I see what you mean...since the drag on the motor created by the 6 psi pulley is relatively low, it's like adding an additional 17-33% of parasitic drag on the engine to make the additional 1-2 psi to end up with maybe 5% additional power from the slightly cooler air?

Wouldn't water/meth injection take care of the IC issue for heat soak without the need of an IC? Something like the Aquamist 6 setup?
Regards,
Jerry

Yes, absolutely.

Plumbing the nozzle into the cast aluminium discharge elbow is no problem at all.
